Easy. He emailed Sorokin a sample of his translation of one of his works. Sorokin liked it. They collaborated over Zoom/email to finish a draft. They shopped it around to different publishers, and with Sorokin's enthusiastic support, Max was able to secure a publishing/translation deal for a few of Sorokin's works. Now he has his foot in the door and can market his other translations off the back of his successful Sorokin translations.

I think Max's biggest hurdle is convincing publishers he's a competent translator in all the languages he claims to translate from. So far he's published mostly Russian translations and one French translation. We know he also has a draft of a German translation.

It is strange to be selected as the official translator for a famous contemporary Russian author at his age. It is odd he was somehow able to get in touch with him via his personal email address and that they both *just happened* to decide between them *via Skype* to gush to publishers about the need for the work to be translated by Max. One can imagine that these sorts of stories are fabricated by publishers in order to gloss over the fact that it's all predicated on cronyism. He does clearly spam himself here. How am I supposed to know that? I don't think there are such stats available. Max is 30 and already went to uni and did a master's degree. I wouldn't count that as particularly uncommon. 18-22 = uni, then that leaves up 8 years for the masters degree. At what point are translators supposed to start? He admitted his Russian was not good enough when he was younger wanted to translate Blue Lard so he studied for more years. It took him like a decade to get to a level where he could translate Sorokin's Russian.
