yes but there's much reason for someone to know who snooky is and not know who gore vidal is

snooky is a celebrity reality tv star
gore vidal is a dead writer (i think?)

op; well i never meant to imply vidal was important, its just that were on the lit page, both those pictured have published books. one is a great original writer and even better historian, the other is a fucking airheaded bimbo

Guilty. I actually do know who Gore Vidal is, but admittedly I didn't know what he looked like and wouldn't have been able to tell you that was him if not for that other anon. I don't think it's particularly horrible if you don't know who Gore Vidal is, is it?

It's impossible, on the other hand, to not know who Snooki is or what she looks like. Intelligent, well-adjusted people who don't watch Jersey Shore aren't exactly immune to over-saturated cable dissemination and low-brow reportage.

Seriously, ditch that cross you pseudo-intellectual flake.

It wasn't that hard. He has even played parts in movies, such as Gattaca.

Now put a recent image of Pynchon.

Well you are wrong. Gore Vidal isn't a very important author and he has no iconic image. His literary status is do mostly to being gay and writing about it in the 1940s-50s.

because it's fucking stupid. we read their books. we read their words and what they say. what they look like don't matter. it can be interesting to watch interviews or whatever, but fundamentally, it's wrong to judge someone's level of culture by whether they can recognize an author's face. someone can do that and never have read one of their books; someone can fail to do that and have read every one of their books; and the second person is more cultured.

being alive and a social person in a mass culture almost inevitably gives one a certain knowledge of popular and significant figures within that culture, even if one is not particularly interested in it. this is basically true unless one makes an active effort to be a hermit. the situation is much different with reading literature - you do not pick up much by osmosis, but nearly everything by what you have sought out. and where it is common to see the picture of a figure from pop culture simply through being alive, it is not common to seek out a picture of an author.

also, i mostly recognize that that's stephen king because his picture gets posted on here a lot, so i mean your point is self-defeating except inasmuch as everyone on /lit/ should suicide.

or it means that they have friends and family who they talk to because they care about them, and those friends and family are unreformed peasant inferior plebeian scum who like these things or follow them as a guilty pleasure. or it means they saw an ad on the bus, or a billboard, or many billboards. or an ad during an intellectual elite television show. or an ad in front of an elite intellectual movie. or, shit, caught five minutes of a show on the television in the doctor's waiting room.

it's really hard to completely avoid that stuff, unless you completely turn yourself away from culture and become a hermit. you're just kind of an asshole about this, i think.
