why is german literature so bad?
im a native german speaker and have read goethe, schiller, hesse, heine, kafka, etc. already in school.
kafka was kinda good but that's it.
the rest didn't do anything for me.
russian literature seems to cuck anything else, kinda insane how much better it is.
am i missing something?

/lit/cucks will cope by bringing up muh philosophy but that’s not literature. German literature is indeed overrated. Still, there are good authors like Mann, Broch, or Jünger, comfy authors loke Moers and one hit wonders like Süskind. I don’t understand why Goethe is so worshipped.

i like german philosophy and old german folk stories but the literature is insanely dry, tbqh i think most people don't enjoy it

germans don't have imagination.

I like Goethe quite a bit and I really like Kafka but I read them both in translation. I think it's pretty much an accepted fact that Germans do not excel in literary fiction and are better represented in philosophy and music. Literary fiction is more the domain of the English, French and Americans, and to a lesser extent the Russians and Italians.

To a lesser extent than the English and French most certainly. I suppose you could put them on par with the Americans, though.

Americans are good at genre fiction but not so much at literary fiction. Italians are virtually irrelevant.

It’s true. They have more good writers of genre fiction than of literary fiction.

Autism. Germans are good at optimisation and playing around with closed and rigorously defined systems. They're a race of STEMcels.

It's not. We were discussing the great works and authors of literary fiction and how they are distributed globally. I listed America as being one of the great literary countries. You countered by saying America has more genre fiction greats than literary fiction greats, which is not only a bold and probably false claim, but it has nothing to do with the topic at hand, because the fact remains that America has a large quantity of literary greats who stand among the best. America simultaneously having a large quantity of talented genre fiction writers doesn't have anything to do with the fact that they also have a large quantity of talented and influential literary fiction authors. You essentially posted a non sequitur.

This is a retarded take by burgers who see postwar industrialization as historic reality. Germany was foremost in 19th century romanticism.

It’s completely true. They’re better at genre than at literary fiction.
> America simultaneously having a large quantity of talented genre fiction writers doesn't have anything to do with the fact that they also have a large quantity of talented and influential literary fiction authors
They don’t have a large amount of good literary fiction authors. You’re putting them on the level of France and England. You’re a retard.

Okay, I'm not even going to bother arguing with you then since you're quite obviously one of those people who froths at the mouth any time someone suggests Americans are good at anything.

/lit/niggers think that if a German said something it's instantly good or profound. Even German words are better. When they want to say science they'll say Wissenschaft, when they want to say history they say Geschichte, etc., etc. even if they don't know any German.

Yeah, you're missing reading good authors. The canonized authors are always dull and trashy. Read some Moers, Arno Schmidt, Paul Scheerbart, Moritz, Benn.
