what makes you like the iliad more than the odyssey?

I noticed lots of people prefer the Odyssey. I think it’s pic related that really drags the Iliad down a bit in comparison.

The Iliad is always fun, while The Odyssey is fun the first half and then the second half is Odysseus talking to people in his town.

It’s more epic.

Odyssey is straight action. It is his tale of returning home and then it cuts straight to shooting the usurpers. Iliad has far too much "yapapopolis son of eschron, who one time once hit his father's slave a long time ago" digressions which take you out of the story. Odyssey is far more streamlined and modern in its storytelling.

I dislike the odyssey because it only has one character and he is less interesting than like half a dozen of the characters in the Iliad.

Maybe we read 2 completely different version, but in my version it had 24 songs. In the song 12 or so (At the half) he gets home, and he spends 10 songs talking to people until he kills everybody on song 23 and he almost has a fight on song 24.

The buildup before the song 23 is like a crescendo and then it erupts. I had l goosebumps/ASMR on my whole body when I was reading it

>> No.23141075

>>23141058
For me those 220 pages of buildup just were not as good as the 700 pages of not-interrupted war between humans and gods. Yes it gets repetitive in the parts where it goes like "yayura song of papra the greatest son of asdear robbed the armor of quayal" but after some chapters you can identify those parts very quickly and skim over them if you don't care that much.

You are reading something abridged or something I don’t even know what. Traditionally, book 23 is where Penelope and Odysseus meet again and then Book 24 is Odysseus meeting his father, Laertes and calming the angry mob. The fighting happens long before that starting in book 20 iirc.

Skimming over anything no matter how boring it is is not how you read books. That’s like telling someone to shut their brain off.

Oh come on, it's not a big of a deal if you only do it in the parts I was refering to. Skimming is not "reading with the brain off", skimming is reading something without giving so much focus or analysis. You won't get ANYTHING from analyzing paparea killing dudutaurus. So it ends being the same if you don't try to give it deep analysis and if you do give it analysis.

I've read different versions and translations and all are the same. The first 4 songs are Telemachus talking to Iliad characters. Then from song 5 to 12 or so it's "The Odyssey". Then from in song 13 Odysseus gets to Ithaca, his town. The fight starts at song 22, so practically 9 songs of Odysseus talking to people, doing "buildup", in a 24 songs book.

You simply do not know how suspense is built in a good story. You have to build up the to the slaughter or else it means nothing.

Wasn't the travel of 20 years and the meeting with Telemachus enough buildup for the killing of the suitors? He literally spends 180 pages (If we consider that each song has an average of 20 pages each) talking to farmers and some servants.

Why have you reread this story so often if you clearly hate it?

>> No.23141115

>>23141106
I don't hate it. I'm just saying that the Iliad is better because it has non-stop action. And it surprises me that people deny the "bad part" of The Odyssey. I'm still waiting for the anon to answer me how is the build-up of talking to farmers better than the 20 years travel full of obstacles.
In my opinion, if The Odyssey would be only the first 13 songs, then the last 4, it would be way better than The Iliad, but that stop in action and story in which it became boring as fuck it makes The Iliad the clear winner.

Also I didn't re-read it, I just read 3 different versions at the same time because you know, ancient texts have weird translations some times, and it's the best way to fully understand the story you are reading.

Odysseus was disguised as an elderly foreigner and works with his devoted pig farmer to scope out the exact situation inside the city of Ithaca and to make the proper plans of how to carry out the massacre and win back his kingdom. That’s not talking to random people. It helps the plot move along and it also builds up suspense. To me, you are the weird one for not getting that.

I get that it's buildup, it's just a bad one. It's boring if it extends to 180 pages in a 400 pages book with barely any conflict. We went from a book full of non-stop action for 700 pages, to a book of 400 pages where 180 of them (Almost the half) is about Odysseus, as you said, informing himself from a pig farmer.
