I haven't encountered any new words yet today. The most recent words I learned:

— Crepitation (noun, from crepitate)
To creak or crack. Also, the discharge of fluid by a beetle in defence.
WHERE I READ IT: ‘The Invisible Man’ by H. G. Wells.

— Loggia (noun)
A corridor or arcade, open on one side. One of those ‘liminal spaces’, half-indoors, half-outdoors.
WHERE I READ IT: ‘Nine Coaches Waiting’ by Mary Stewart.

BONUS USEFUL WORD OF THE DAY:

— Phatic (adjective)
Of speech, ritualistic, intended as social lubricant, not strictly meaningful. e.g. ‘How's things?’

(4chan autists attempting to negotiate the real world often answer phatic normie questions sincerely, leading to embarrassment all round.)

Some words I like:

Ganne (verb)
To bark as a fox.
It comes from the Latin gannire. Attested English words which are related to it include 'obganiate' (to repeat tediously), and 'ogganition' (snarling, growling, grumbling). It is one of very many more-or-less-nonce-words that have seldom made it beyond the confines of a dictionary.

Subitize (verb)
To apprehend the number of things contained in a small group immediately, without actually needing to count them.
Derived presumably from the Latin subitus, meaning 'sudden', this word was first written down in 1949, as a deliberate coinage for the sake of expressing the idea it does.

Saccade (noun)
A rapid jerk of the eye (as one makes, e.g., when reading).
From a French word of the same meaning, it can refer to other sorts of jerking motions, but I've focused on the one I enjoy.

Also a word I thought I knew, or sorta do, but didn't know it also had another, more negative meaning

Amenable
(Adj.) open and responsive to suggestion; easily persuaded or controlled
but also
willing to agree or to accept something that is wanted or asked for

I once said years ago to an advisor that my professor would probably be "amenable" to something. I hope it wasn't taken the wrong way lol
