“Happy the creators of pessimistic systems! Besides taking refuge in the fact of having made something, they can exult in their explanation of universal suffering, and include themselves in it.”
― Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet

“The fanatical atheists are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who—in their grudge against traditional religion as the "opium of the masses"—cannot hear the music of the spheres.”

No, it is from a Union officer (Sherman I think) who was telling Bismarck about how to deal with French guerilla fighters. It is however frequently attributed to Bismarck himself.

>“Happy the creators of pessimistic systems! Besides taking refuge in the fact of having made something, they can exult in their explanation of universal suffering, and include themselves in it.”

I don't really get this quote. what exactly is his beef with pessimists? feels as if he wrote this spitefully. reads like "you were right, go and laugh now!" I mean what would he preferred them to do, lie and pretend life is not awful? or ignore this problem completely and be silent about it?

I never really understood this pessoa guy. he is not really against or for something. he is obviously not happy, but he is adamant about making a case how he is not sad. or rather compile a book of reasons why one logically cannot be sad yet, despite living and experiencing a different reality. I don't understand why he even wrote.

Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour. Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.
