The repairs aren't the real issue, but rather me not seeing this house as MY home. I live here, and we get along well enough, but whenever asked I describe the arrangement as "temporary".
Maybe the bad taste in my mouth is derived from the fact I feel the burden of looking over things falls on my lap instead of hers, me being the "man of the house" instead of a simple "son."
It's a difficult situation. I'm not American, but here, too, housing has gotten expensive enough that paying rent instad of saving feels like financial suicide.
On the other hand, with each passing year I feel like my window to leave — and leave her my herself — gets narrower. Not to mention I get embarassed having to tell people — especially girls — I live with my mom at 29.
Her birthday was a couple of weeks ago, and I was the only "child" out of 4 to attend. The rest left the family home and my sisters don't speak to her anymore. I remember she was a little tipsy, and cried saying I was "the only one left".
