Is there a book that explains how to properly and skillfully take a notes, other than just recommending Ryan Holiday's YouTube videos?

>> No.23117450

that book actually does have a chapter on note taking I believe

im pre engi so all of my classes are pretty much just math and memorizing rules for classes that are math with an extra step or a step away from just being math, but have began self studying psychology from the ground up, and I have no idea how to properly learn a subject that doesn't have an actual action to it

like if I wanna learn math I just get taught the steps and then do them over and over

is learning a subject in the realm of biology or medicine or whatever else doesn't really have 'practice' really just cramming flashcards into my head until I remember it like I remember streets I grew up on? There has to be a better method for self study than this. At least with classes on these subjects you get labs and lectures from interesting guests that make units and topics more memorable

also taking notes feels retarded and redundant to me, especially as someone that just likes to read, it feels fucking weird just writing down some shit I just read in less words. Is this really learning??

How's your zettelkasten going? I found it difficult to incorporate into my daily routine, and I'm an academic. Maybe I need to read something about creating habits

If you can’t categorize stuff and memorize the stuff worth remembering then literature just isn’t for you. You don’t need a book on how to write notes.

It's growing and fun to link my notes together.

How do you normally take notes?

I'm a physicist. I note down things directly on the papers I read in Zotero ("literary" notes). Then later I write down the important equations and concepts in LyX or directly on LaTeX. But this way I end up with big files full of related information instead of small, atomic zettels. I tried using Zettlr for a great while but it's a bit annoying in the end to convert markdown to latex whenever I have to write something. Maybe zettelkasten are more adapted to people who don't write many equations

Try using physical papers, probably postcard size or smaller, for a few days/weeks. This way it'll force you to break down each concept to a small, self-contained note.

You do a physical zettelkasten or a digital one? Do you see advantages to physical notes?

>> No.23117767

>>23117715
Started off with digital. Found that I was basically re-making Wikipedia and everything didn't look like zettel at all. Rewrote them into physical ones and used that for a while. After I got an idea of the length of each note, I returned to digital again.
>Do you see advantages to physical notes?
Browsing, linking, viewing, etc. It's all better than using pen and paper. But it's much easier to misuse it and write giant blocks of text which defer the whole point of zettel.
