What you're describing is part of a much much larger movement that began with things like Buckley purging the Birchers and of course the massive Neocon purges of people like Joe Sobran and Mel Bradford in the '80s

Basically, everybody that the 4chan generation(s) would describe as "based" was purged mercilessly so that only Jew-friendly libertarians, evangelical grifters, Straussians, and civic nationalists could remain, along with their the usual career politicos who will simply say and do anything to keep their jobs.

Principled "conservatism" never quite got off the ground in America (see Paul Gottfried's very short overview book, The Conservative Movement), never quite synthesized into a movement around Goldwater or Nixon or anything and its early phases were too vague and too syncretic (libertarian, Catholic, a few Southern Agrarians, aristrocratic Burkean, anti-communist semi-paranoiacs, etc.). It was never a real movement but a hotchpotch. Then, as soon as people did emerge with the will to give it a fucking backbone, they were destroyed. Just like the liberals purged any real social change from their mainstream movements.

Sam Francis is great because he provides both a diagnosis of this, and a solution. The diagnosis is cancer (anarcho-tyranny and the permanent managerial state). The solution is Gramscian use of the most hated and most targeted natural enemy of the managerial state, the white middle class and its basic values and worldview, as a hard core around which a populist and economic nationalist movement can form, making strategic alliances with other groups but ultimately aiming to wipe the technocrats out of power.

It's too bad he never finished or repackaged Leviathan and its Enemies, because it has all the right ideas but it's unreadable to 99.9999% of people.

Part of it is that modern conservatism has been retarded since Reagan, part of it because liberal academics have been pretty well organized. This is a big factor, since it favors mediocre but consistent results. I think that's an outcome of the "left" taking over academia rather than the cause, though. The dominance of leftist thought in academia became clear by the 60s and 70s, but the post-high school training center issue only started in the 90s or so.

Not at all true. The USA was a fairly right-wing country, just of a market liberal rather than national socialist bent. America was one of the main supporters of conservative (and sometimes even fascist/nationalist) governments globally. The bigger problem was that US victory in WW2 forced the country to take on the position of a global hegemon and leader rather than a mere great power.
That position takes its toll and makes it harder to address internal problems.
