Herbert McBride - A Rifleman Went to War

If you like Storm of Steel, this is the American version. McBride joined the Canadian army before American involvement, because he was worried on missing out on the adventure. He served as a sniper and as a machine-gunner and has interesting things to say on the equipment and tactics. Like Junger, he treated the war as a positive experience. He extra hated Germans.

Raphael Semmes - Memoirs of Service Afloat During the War Between the States

Very discursive history of the war by the South’s most recalcitrant Confederate. He frequently breaks off from the narrative to engage in autistic digressions concerning marine biology, oceanography, history, and travel writing. Post-war Semmes practiced law, taught at what would become LSU, and gave lectures on how the South was justified in secession. It was Semmes that popularized the term “War Between the States.” He wrote another memoir about his service in the Mexican-American war, but it’s hard to find a physical copy. I’ve yet to read it.

Thorolf Hillblad - Twilight of the Gods

Written by an unrepentant Swedish SS man. It’s interesting to see him say positive things about Slavs and give his reasons for fighting without having them filtered by a third party.

Christian De La Maziere - The Captive Dreamer

Another SS memoir. This time the author was a member of SS Charlemagne.
