Every rich reader I know reads the whatever social media tells them to read. On the other hand, readers who are struggling financially read the absolute best because they can't afford to waste money on nothing. They look up the books, read their reviews, and watch videos on them before they decide to buy them.
Anyway, reading literature is a form of entertainment. It has no more value than watching movies and porn.

Not entirely wrong, it depends what you read and how.
If you're reading some high literature, taking notes (on paper or in your mind), studying the philosophies. moral dilemmas and such, it can be very valuable. But that also applies to some movies (not porn unfortunately)

If you're basically skimming through the book and/or reading erotica and other young adult type shit without putting that much thought to it, it is just a form of entertainment.

Let’s be honest, dude. This is non-culture that arose out of the internet and social media. The industrial era of the printing press was the highest of cultures compared to this. In fact, printing press to world wars was arguably the high point for prose literature. It only started to rapidly decline after the wars and the internet just tossed it off a cliff.

This is one of those “what could a banana cost, 10 dollars” moments. If you’re poor you don’t buy books. You use a library. You pirate books. Hell you can even get them for free on internet archive, on ebook apps if they’re public domain. If you’re splurging you get something out of the bargain bin at a used book store. Hell these days you can get them for free if you pay attention to local listings as people ditch them before moving rather than move a library. Or clearing out someone’s home after they die.

You don’t know what poverty is and you’re a weirdo for using pretzel logic about it in an online argument.

rightwingers don't like widespread literacy because it means less people vote for them.

There's a reason why the Catholic Church (as just one example among many) banned the laity from reading the Bible. It's the same principle. Knowledge in the hands of many (i.e. democracy) is antithetical to aristocratic/republican methods, which prefers power in the hands of a few.

not really, they just say that so they can get their ideas across, but when it comes time to hearing the other side they'll shut them down with accusations of being irreligious or communist, etc. Rightwingers are more known for banning books, let's not forget.

Sure, leftwingers have banned certain books too, though the reasoning behind theirs is different. Rightwing ban books because they want to keep (just a few examples) sex, gays, trans, in the closet. Leftwing ban books because they're extremely racist (the usual culprit).
The rightwing think premarital or gay sex is sinful, and then glorify violence and murder when its done at the behest of the rich and powerful (i.e. war)

Set during the Greek Heroic Age, it is an adaptation of various Greek myths, most notably the Odyssey, as told from the perspective of Circe. The novel explores Circe's origin story and narrates Circe's encounters with mythological figures such as Hermes, the Minotaur, Jason, and Medea, and ultimately her romance with Odysseus and his son, Telemachus.

In 2018, Circe was named the Best Fantasy novel in the Goodreads Choice Awards, received the Red Tentacle Kitschie Award for best novel, and was an Athenaeum Literary Award winner

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
A novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived.

Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on foreverr to infinity, each one the story of another reality. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices

One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

The protagonist is faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility a new life life, a new career path, new relationships, continuing ones you ended too early, and extending ones you wished has lasted longer, realizing dreams through the Midnight Library while deciding what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place

My funniest bookstore experience was when I went to the local equivalent of Barnes&Noble to pick up an order, decided to see if I could tick some more stuff off my list so I asked the girl at the counter if they had Ovid's Ars Amatoria
>Let me check - you said Ovid?
>Yes
>What's his last name?
>Yeah nevermind

This is one of the ones being made into a movie, they already got the script for finished and the director hired

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: widely praised fantasy novel based about Adeline LaRue, who makes makes a bargain with the devil (she names Luc) that makes her immortal, but curses her to be forgotten by everyone she meets (even after one encounter). She's a French lady made the deal back in 1714 in a French village, but the novel is set in present day NYC. Over time she subtly influences many people, making marks in history and inspiring the creation of songs and art about her

>Schwab’s new book The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue isn’t just an amazing book for its genre; it’s an amazing book, full stop...a gorgeous, immersive story.”―Chicago Review of Books

>“One of the most propulsive, compulsive and captivating novels in recent memory.”―Washington Post

>"When I first finished Addie LaRue, I sat back with a deep sense of wonder. Schwab’s words had weaved their spell and left me starstruck... eloquent and beautiful...Addie LaRue sparks something internally as you read and what is the point of reading, if not to feel?"―The Nerd Daily

>This book was, just WOW. This book is amazing. point blank.

> A Magnificent Story Worth Reading Again & Again.... a fantastic book .... there are very few books I would go back and re-read. This is one such book.

>barely any good books released before 18th century
>close to zero good books written before the invention of the printing press in the 15th century
>novels basically didn't exist until 17th century
No dude, it definitely wasn't comfier. The best age for literature in my opinion was the 19th century, and at that time even a large part of the low class could afford buying a book every now and then.

>Higher barrier to entry is almost always a good thing
When it comes to consumption, no, I don't see a single reason for that. When it comes to creating, yes, since it filters out people who don't really care that much.

Just my opinion.

Compared to the 19th century alone, 17th century literature and before feels really fucking empty. The first millenium basically consists of schizo-babble, and the first half of the second millenium also does.
