Why aren't old books updated

when they use terms like "queer" or "gay". Nowadays it just means homosexual. It's very jarring to read. I remember reading LOTR and other books recently and this took me out. It's an obstacle in their longevity.

Shakespeare could be seen to have updated a lot of stories into modern English.

My coworker asked me who my favorite author was and I told them it was Faulkner. They asked me for a recommendation and I said Light in August is pretty approachable. I only realized later that it say "nigger" about 500 times. Oh well.
