I'm reading "Diary of a Drug Fiend" right now, and it's excellent. A lot of lines in his poetry are great, too. Why doesn't anyone talk about him when discussing great authors?

He's up there with Lenin as one of the most influential individuals of the 20th century. Once you start noticing, you can't stop noticing. He was the true Nietzschean Ubermensch in all its greatness and baseness. That fateful day in Egypt truly was the ushering in of a new era, even if it wasn't the Aeon of Horus he believed it was.

As far as Crowley is concerned, it means communing with spirits and receiving guidance or knowledge from them that when applied affords some material benefit. That's what he taught.
The language, symbols and ritual, the sex and the drug use were means to that end; his primary preoccupation was experimenting with the best ways to do it, coming as close as possible to a science of it, regardless whatsoever of any moral or superstitious objections.

He's a highly underrated writer -- much of his stuff is far more erudite and eloquent than the more famous stuff of many of his contemporaries (a good starter is his Little Essays Toward Truth) -- but I don't think he found anything ultimately consoling in occultism/mysticism, for the simple reason that I don't think there's anything to be found, though for what it's worth, I do get a better vibe from the New Thought guys like Atkinson and the old parapsychology journals from the Society for Psychical Research and whatnot.

>A lot of lines in his poetry are great, too.
Unfortunately his critics spread the idea that he was a terrible poet and the idea just stuck, so people believe it without having read him. Even if you don't like the guy you have to admit his poetry was technically excellent.

I like the sound of this, except lumping The Book of the Law in there with the others. If you're taking it seriously you need to decide at some point whether to burn it or ignore the warnings and keep it. Having it as part of a collection diminishes the transgression of putting a "forbidden" book on your shelf.
