Y'know with how many pissant little kingdoms in the middle there, why doesn't anybody just bulldoze a fuckload of them. Like those angry red island fuckers could basically invade with impunity and just start rolling them up. Completely unrealistic. The only reason would be to make a default "Borderlands" for people's dnd campaigns to take place and that's the only justification you could have for them not having been eaten by the greater powers around them.

before actual workable cannons became a thing (~1450) it was easier to defend than to attack... if there stood a castle or fortified city in your way, you had to starve them out... which was kind of hard considering they probably had provisions until next spring, and you were surrounded by other castles (as a ton of "pissant little kingdoms" = a shitload of castles) who eyed your weapons, armor, and horses with glee
not to mention that every peasant had to know how to fight and provide at least a bow & arrow if poor (or equipment for a knight if wealthy)
but yeah let's suppose you are smart and decide you won't take the castle, but go around it... what the fuck are you doing mate? just walking around with your army till they die of hunger? steal the only thimble & silver mirror in the village? eat five pigs?
