Can someone recommend me some "reverse isekai" novels? Stories where a character out of a fantasy realm or the distant past is transported via some authorial means into the present-day or recent past, rather than the reverse, which is the usual.

The Hallowed Hunt, The World of the Five Gods #3 - Lois McMaster Bujold (2005)

Lord Ingrey kin Wolfcliff, twenty four years old, has been ordered to investigate the murder of Prince Boleso. The prince had been sent away because he had murdered, skinned, then butchered one of his manservants. Lady Ijada killed him because he attempted to rape her during a forbidden forest ritual involving animal sacrifice and their spirits. Ingrey must return to Easthome with Boleso's salt preserved corpse and Ijada so that they both stand trial, the former before the gods and the latter at court. Ingrey and Ijada immediately fall into a peculiar relationship with an unexpected power dynamic. All five gods and their representatives, a sorcerer of immense power, and the nobility influence their actions. A plot centuries in the making unfolds. All the pieces on the board must think they're moving themselves rather than being moved.

The Hallowed Hunt has a completely new cast, aside from the gods, and takes place in a previously unmentioned land. I've seen this described as a trilogy of standalone fantasy novels and while I think that's somewhat arguable for the first two that's definitely true for this one. I don't know quite how to sum up what this one is about without spoiling a lot, but even I did, I think what it is about is rather underwhelming. For the most part the characters lack agency and go where they're supposed to and do what they're forced to. What saved this book for me was the writing. It was nice enough to read, even though most everything else was lacking. This was especially the case for the mastermind antagonist's motivations. When they were revealed I was vastly disappointed because of how petty it was.

Of the three books this one has the most romance by far. I wouldn't have minded as much, but it just seemed to happen because the plot needed it to be. It was oddly developed and there's a slight bit of shifter stuff as it deals a lot with animal spirits. It may be unfair of me, but the kind of paranormal romance it made me think of definitely detracted from my enjoyment. I also don't think they made a good couple in general, or were that interesting of characters. I don't know what happened with this book, relative to the previous two.

I'd say this one is an optional read. The first two are great and this one is alright, though the comparison to the previous books hurts it. My first thought was to give this 3.5 rounded up, mostly out of inertia, but after writing this and thinking it over, I don't think I can. There's simply not enough that I liked about it, but even so, it's still a close call. Next in the setting is the dozen or so Penric and Desdemona novellas. I expect them to be at least somewhat better than this was.

Rating: 3.5/5

My predictions for TWOW:
Daenerys winds up not being either a Targ or Blackfyre just a girl who looked the part and has no role in story. It contrasts Jon's reveal of being a secret prince who was in hiding she was out in the open larping as a Targaryen

Arya will take Sansa's face and wed Aegon this whole thing mirrors Rhaegar/Lyanna somewhat bookending the series with a Stark and Targaryen alliance fixing things.

I've been a bit slow in reading recently since I finished Dune and now half way through Solaris. I am greatful this is a short book. An incredibly difficult read. I struggle to imagine the structures the alien blob creates. The scientific conversations are hard to understand I might as well be reading in a different language. I like how it began creepy. A big random naked negress ghost walking about with no clue as to who, what or where it came from. The mimic dead girlfriend as well is interesting and I myself would be very conflicted over killing it, or treating as if it was my girlfriend. I will finish the book as I don't like leaving books unfinished, but i'm not enjoying Solaris. A 5/10 so far. Interesting concept, maybe i'm just too dumb to conceptualise the mimoids and their creations.

Lem is not a good author at all. I read Fiasco and it was a complete waste of time, even regressive for its time. There are a few reasons he is so heavily praised:
>The common disease of slavophilia in readers
>Many scifi/fantasy readers exclusively read trash, so when they accidentally read something with even a modicum of writerly-ability beyond that, they think it's the best thing, and as they are also prone to autism, they won't shut up about it

For an actually funny way that it's bad the blurb has like 5 hypotheticals that might be vaguely interesting directions to take a fantasy story in and every single one of them just straight up does not actually happen in the text.

Queen of Sorcery, Belgariad is a classic but i never had the chance to read it as a kid, i love the banter between the characters.
The Book of Lost Swords: Sightblinder's Story, not as good as the previous Swords books but the second-half of the book is basically a dungeon crawler which was a nice suprise. As a side note one of the Main characters is a 60 yo former evil Queen Yambu, the villain from the first Swords trilogy which wasn't a common thing to do back in the day, Saberhagen was probably inspired by The Lady from Black Company.

FWIW, the general structure of Malazan (at least as far as I can tell, just starting Midnight Tides myself) is that it's a really slow first 60-70%, then the rest is super breakneck and awesome. MoI definitely takes a little while to get going, but picks up like midway through during the siege of Capustan, and only slightly drops that momentum before the climax brings it back up.

House of Chains is a bit of a step down though I think

I've never been able to consentrate on reading with any melodic music. It's as if i had two tv channels on simultaneusly. Anything apart from harmonies and deep droning tends to completely mess my reading experience. A well suited and calm ambient on the other hand just makes scifi a shitload better and more escapist. The somewhat strange thing is that i have no such problem with manga, but might be due to me being a imaginationlet.

The 3rd discworld book is about the patriarchy
At this point it's obvious that you're just crying about an author not being right wing and needed some excuse to try and fit it into an (incomprehensible) narrative of the author declining as they became more left wing. But that makes no sense for Pratchett who was always both consistent and incredibly front and centre with his beliefs.

depends on why exactly magic is useless
Fireballs and lightning are all well and good but if you think daily usage, being able to levitate a thing a couple inches off the ground is already very useful, as is any kind of energy transformation (creating matter, pushing or pulling).
This could make a very interesting story about a group of scientists that use magic in creative ways to make large-scale "impossible" things.

If magic is useless because it consumes too much resources (ie you destroy a scarce mineral to do a minor thing, or a mage spends all of his "mana" to do something a regular man can do in somewhat the same time) then that just sounds pointless

>His majordomo typed the post with trembling hands, devastated as he saw his mentor, teacher, shift and ondulate across the floor. George had lost all grip to reality in his now ceaseless endeavor to consume food at all times, crawling and rolling from spot to spot, smashing his face onto snacks, clumps of slop and any food items his staff now could only throw at his proximity. Coming closer had been impossible in the past few months due to the unspeakable stench. George did not sleep. He ate. Didn't leave the house or speak to anyone, defecating and pissing himself almost constantly. He ate. The majordomo wiped his tears from behind the safety glass, visible from the control room to the man he once admired, though the thing he had now become did not seem to care or even notice. "They called him fat. Then, they called him FAT. They were so right. We were fools to not see it, it's now too late. It's... " he turned away and left the room, the mansion, the compound, this nightmare. Within a week the rest of the staff followed suit. George R. R. Martin lay in his own filth and decomposing refuse, wheezing. "hmfrrgfwwaa.. hmfrtmbleught.. ttaAAAHBLueur.. whwhaaa.. WHATABLOUTTAXSHES?!!"

Who was the first author to come up with Probability Drive?

I first heard about it in Hitchhiker's Guide, though recently I read "The Road to the Sea" by Arthur C. Clarke (1951), and there's mention of a failed attempt to build one.
Anyone know of earlier mentions of this type of drive or did Arthur C. Clarke come up with it? Any other instances of it?

Also I feel like Chalion (and some others) is really against the spirit of the exercise, if it's a standalone there shouldn't be other books in the series/set in the world. Chalion's just extra egregious because it has a sequel that directly follows on from it.

I enjoy weir's "math action", and he captures the existential dread of space well, but he can't write human character or motivation to save his life. Best character is the one that can't actually talk. All of the Earth-based segments are almost hard to read with his chronic inability to write characters with more than a single trait.

"The Magicians" by Lev Grossman - Often described exactly as "Harry Potter for adults," this series follows Quentin Coldwater to Brakebills, a college for magical training. It's filled with mature themes, including complex relationships, existential crises, and darker magic.

"The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicle series) - This series features a sophisticated magical university and follows the life of a gifted young man growing up to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen. The storytelling is rich, and the themes are definitely aimed at an adult audience.

"A Deadly Education" by Naomi Novik (The Scholomance series) - Set in a school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death, this series tackles dark themes and has a more adult tone. The school itself is a character, full of dangers and mysteries.

"Ninth House" by Leigh Bardugo - This novel is set in an alternate reality where the secret societies of Yale are practitioners of arcane magic. It's a dark, adult-themed narrative with a strong mystery and supernatural elements.

"Vita Nostra" by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko - A book that delves into the transformation of a young girl at a very peculiar school of magic. The story is filled with metaphysical concepts and presents a darker, more philosophical approach to the magic school genre.

"The Poppy War" by R.F. Kuang - While not set in a traditional magic school, this grimdark fantasy draws on historical events and features a military academy where the protagonist learns about strategy and shamanism. It's known for its brutal and realistic portrayal of war and complex themes.

"The Black Prism" by Brent Weeks (Lightbringer series) - This series includes a magic school setting, and it's known for its unique magic system and mature themes. The story is complex with a focus on political intrigue, warfare, and moral ambiguity.

Each of these books or series offers a unique take on the magic school concept with a more adult perspective, delving into complex themes, moral dilemmas, and often darker narratives. They should provide a rich reading experience if you're looking for something akin to "Harry Potter for adults."
