The Hallowed Hunt, The World of the Five Gods #3 - Lois McMaster Bujold (2005)

Lord Ingrey kin Wolfcliff, twenty four years old, has been ordered to investigate the murder of Prince Boleso. The prince had been sent away because he had murdered, skinned, then butchered one of his manservants. Lady Ijada killed him because he attempted to rape her during a forbidden forest ritual involving animal sacrifice and their spirits. Ingrey must return to Easthome with Boleso's salt preserved corpse and Ijada so that they both stand trial, the former before the gods and the latter at court. Ingrey and Ijada immediately fall into a peculiar relationship with an unexpected power dynamic. All five gods and their representatives, a sorcerer of immense power, and the nobility influence their actions. A plot centuries in the making unfolds. All the pieces on the board must think they're moving themselves rather than being moved.

The Hallowed Hunt has a completely new cast, aside from the gods, and takes place in a previously unmentioned land. I've seen this described as a trilogy of standalone fantasy novels and while I think that's somewhat arguable for the first two that's definitely true for this one. I don't know quite how to sum up what this one is about without spoiling a lot, but even I did, I think what it is about is rather underwhelming. For the most part the characters lack agency and go where they're supposed to and do what they're forced to. What saved this book for me was the writing. It was nice enough to read, even though most everything else was lacking. This was especially the case for the mastermind antagonist's motivations. When they were revealed I was vastly disappointed because of how petty it was.

Of the three books this one has the most romance by far. I wouldn't have minded as much, but it just seemed to happen because the plot needed it to be. It was oddly developed and there's a slight bit of shifter stuff as it deals a lot with animal spirits. It may be unfair of me, but the kind of paranormal romance it made me think of definitely detracted from my enjoyment. I also don't think they made a good couple in general, or were that interesting of characters. I don't know what happened with this book, relative to the previous two.

I'd say this one is an optional read. The first two are great and this one is alright, though the comparison to the previous books hurts it. My first thought was to give this 3.5 rounded up, mostly out of inertia, but after writing this and thinking it over, I don't think I can. There's simply not enough that I liked about it, but even so, it's still a close call. Next in the setting is the dozen or so Penric and Desdemona novellas. I expect them to be at least somewhat better than this was.

Got two other Herbert Non-Dune books yesterday Destination Void and The Dosadi Experiment. Destination Void is pretty fun so far mostly reading it because of the connection to Berserk but it's a lot of fun. I'd be fine reading Dosadi on its own without prior reading The Whipping Star, right?

I've been a bit slow in reading recently since I finished Dune and now half way through Solaris. I am greatful this is a short book. An incredibly difficult read. I struggle to imagine the structures the alien blob creates. The scientific conversations are hard to understand I might as well be reading in a different language. I like how it began creepy. A big random naked negress ghost walking about with no clue as to who, what or where it came from. The mimic dead girlfriend as well is interesting and I myself would be very conflicted over killing it, or treating as if it was my girlfriend. I will finish the book as I don't like leaving books unfinished, but i'm not enjoying Solaris. A 5/10 so far. Interesting concept, maybe i'm just too dumb to conceptualise the mimoids and their creations.

It's generally bad with poor characterisation, over indulgent worldbuilding that's dumped upon the reader and despite said worldbuilding characters don't actually follow their supposed cultural beliefs when there's actual stakes involved.
For an actually funny way that it's bad the blurb has like 5 hypotheticals that might be vaguely interesting directions to take a fantasy story in and every single one of them just straight up does not actually happen in the text.

Queen of Sorcery, Belgariad is a classic but i never had the chance to read it as a kid, i love the banter between the characters.
The Book of Lost Swords: Sightblinder's Story, not as good as the previous Swords books but the second-half of the book is basically a dungeon crawler which was a nice suprise. As a side note one of the Main characters is a 60 yo former evil Queen Yambu, the villain from the first Swords trilogy which wasn't a common thing to do back in the day, Saberhagen was probably inspired by The Lady from Black Company.

FWIW, the general structure of Malazan (at least as far as I can tell, just starting Midnight Tides myself) is that it's a really slow first 60-70%, then the rest is super breakneck and awesome. MoI definitely takes a little while to get going, but picks up like midway through during the siege of Capustan, and only slightly drops that momentum before the climax brings it back up.

I've never been able to consentrate on reading with any melodic music. It's as if i had two tv channels on simultaneusly. Fireballs and lightning are all well and good but if you think daily usage, being able to levitate a thing a couple inches off the ground is already very useful, as is any kind of energy transformation (creating matter, pushing or pulling).
This could make a very interesting story about a group of scientists that use magic in creative ways to make large-scale "impossible" things.

If magic is useless because it consumes too much resources (ie you destroy a scarce mineral to do a minor thing, or a mage spends all of his "mana" to do something a regular man can do in somewhat the same time) then that just sounds pointless

I first heard about it in Hitchhiker's Guide, though recently I read "The Road to the Sea" by Arthur C. Clarke (1951), and there's mention of a failed attempt to build one.
Anyone know of earlier mentions of this type of drive or did Arthur C. Clarke come up with it? Any other instances of it?
All results on Google just come up with Hitchhiker's Guide. I've never read about it in a serious context, would be interesting to see it in more stories (the Clarke story has some repercussions that are never really explored).
