Oh, oh, speaking of PDFs.

I had the idea of converting these sterile PDF books — such as the top half of the picrel — to look as though they were scanned, for reading from a screen. To me the bottom half is far cozier and easier to read than the default Computer Modern or whichever ghastly thin and gray fonts publishing houses use when planning for ink bleed.

So I could likely put together a bash script to split PDFs into pages, put each one through an ImageMagick blur–smudge–contrast filter, and glue the pages back together; but perhaps someone already has a tested solution that looks good? Other than actually printing and scanning the pages.

I have a request for some Google books. I believe the following are fully viewable and downloadable in the US (they're out of copyright, should be so too in the EU, but Google (and HathiTrust) only allow US access). If so, could someone download them and upload them elsewhere? thx

Ended up doing just this, with acceptable results.

$ pdftopng -f 100 -l 300 -r 300 in.pdf out # from the Xpdf toolkit, better results than native ImageMagick
$ for f in *.png; do magick "$f" -alpha off -motion-blur 5x1+0 -threshold 90% "$f"; done
$ magick convert *.png out.pdf
$ rm *.png
