There is no good reason not to do anything. And there is no good reason to do something. What first seemed wrong might later prove to be right, however improbable. And what first seemed to everyone to surely be right might later turn out to be a terrible choice. How are we to navigate the world with this in mind? The middle way, which is the instinctive response of most to this dilemma, mostly works out as insipid and lukewarm - producing stunted lives lived in quiet desperation.

Are there any books that grapple effectively with this problem?

Sometimes it's better to just not think about some things because you take your own consciousness about the supposed reality of the world around you so far into one direction that you start to contemplate complete nonsense and become an idiot. A miserable and anxious idiot at that, the worst kind.

You can’t avoid making decisions, even the choice to do nothing is itself a decision. Hell you made the decision to make this post already. Don’t shy away from living your life just because you can’t discern if it has any meaning, you still have to live it so you may as well do so without hesitation or anxiety that what you’re doing is meaningless. Your trepidation is meaningless like everything else, there is no reason to balk at the human condition just as there is no reason to do anything else
