Remember when Ivy league educations meant something? One quick browse through the Harvard Crimson and you will discover how far the general intelectual level at those universities has fallen

Why was homoeroticism so common in 1800s America? Those Melville letters to Hawthorne oh boy

What about the Melville-Hawthorne correspondence was gay? I read through their entire correspondence (the Divine Magnet) and never got that impression once. Maybe I missed something. Melville and Hawthorne were very conservative and frankly Orthodox in their Christian understanding, especially if their correspondence was any indication. I doubt they tolerated himosexuality in any degree.

1. Melville was a sailor. Enough said.
2. Melville wasn’t an orthodox Christian, he was a gnostic

Did you even read the divine magnet? He was clearly a practicing Christian. He wasn't part of the denomination known as Orthodox but he adhered to the traditional theology and dogma of Christianity (the eccumenical councels), which is what Orthodox are, so one could definitely say he was an Orthodox Christian of sorts.

>all sailors are gay
projection, can't imagine making being so childish as to make such a blatant generalization about one occupation.

we only think this sounds gay because we grew up with a hypersexual media that expressed itself mainly in innuendo. not saying melville wasn't gay but i don't consider this an indicator especially when you know how hawthorne influenced moby dick's writing.

This is just a man expressing his love and gratitude to another friend- nay, a brother. If any of you had anything approaching the actual heart and soul of a poet, you would understand how gratifying it is to finally meet someone who fully understands you.

All great men are at least in some respect. The desire to cope with exclusion from the cthonic force/prison of woman is what drives men to both homosexuality and the building of society, language, culture, etc.
