BNW is balanced on a knife's edge and this fact slips out to the reader multiple times throughout the narrative (e.g. the riot I mentioned in the previous post and Lenina accidentally killing a few hundred people in a far off colony a generation down the road because John rejected her). The society isn't based around hedonism so much as it is about managing any unpredictability that arises in the pursuit of such. If totally suppressing pleasure became a viable option that's what they'd do (the book doesn't take that track because it would undermine the opportunity for social commentary and the book wasn't written for retarded plotfags).
