Preying on modern fears post theological concepts of life and dearth (God is dead and we killed him) did make his writing stand out. I’d argue though it isn’t just that. What makes his writing pop, for me, is the blending of good science fiction writing and the spiritual. Many Americans believed in folklore and spiritual understanding of the world along side the scriptures at that time.
