Why did I put off reading Schopenhauer for so long? His works are fantastic.

>> No.2290244

philosophy's greatest writer. his short essays are great too. I especially enjoyed the dialogues about religion and death.

Just about to start his essay on how to win any argument. Loved his essay on vanity and the sufferings of the world.

>> No.2290261

Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and Wittgenstein are god-tier.

I wouldn't bother reading anything else.

>> No.2290266

Because he's a busta.

I'd consider reading Kant a prerequisite to reading Schopenhauer.

>> No.2290276

>>2290261

So... no Plato? lol.

He's good, a bit insane and not always (but sometimes) a great writer. Nietzsche and Schopenhauer I'd read just for fun because it's actually an enjoyable read.

I also think reading Samuel Von Pufendorf prior to Schopenhauer is also very beneficial. They have very similar thoughts on punishment.

B. Russell was a greater writer then Wittgenstein.

Wittgenstein is over rated.

Russells okay. His history of western philosophy is a bit of a let down though.

>> No.2290305

his essay on women is surprisingly accurate.this women-hater could write.

Anyone else find it interesting that several of the best philosophical writers were also in some respect misogynists?

>> No.2290318

>>2290312

good point. maybe we should be misogynists too?

>> No.2290319

Most great philosophers seem to hate women.

One of Schop's good points is that his entire philosophical system is contained in a single book. He also wrote that shit in his 20's

Gotta love a concise philosopher.

>> No.2290353

This.

>> No.2290363

>>2290348
Concise is great. But, you do have to wonder how Schop managed to live the rest of his life knowing that he had figured out the world and the universe when he was in his twenties.

>> No.2290365

>>2290363
Well, most manage to live long, full lives after figuring everything out when they hit 14.

He probably had few complications.

>> No.2290367

>>2290363

You'd be amazed. It's pretty liberating.

>> No.2290402

what are some good books for people that are starting to read philosophy?

>> No.2290412

Read Russell's History of Western Philosophy for a brief introduction to philosophy and for a sort of map to guide your reading.

After that I started with Aristotle and worked my way forward from there.
