I actually like these types of stories if they're done well (like in the stories of Haruki Murakami for example). But I'd say those stories usually work better if it's left ambigious whether it's trauma or something else entirely (like Murakami does it). Of course there are also lots of bad stories utilizing said trope.

Its a horror movie but it's about if people were treated the way we treat livestock

You mean like basically every horror monster for most of history except more like actual trauma / physical abuse instead of the mental gymnastic trauma of modern "people"?

"It's a horror story, but it represents.." is a solid model. The problem is trauma, and our pseudo scientific understanding of it. The cultural obsession has become tedious, and it's a sign of decadence when fiction describes the consequence of the experience rather than the experience itself.

The main problem is that the modern and postmodern minds have no sense of myth or romance. They want so badly to tell stories about symbols but they miss the point that you're supposed to tell stories about truths. Anything can be a symbol. Not everything can be a truth.

One time a mate told me he was writing a slasher where a mother kills children who misbehave, fully knowing he is indulging himself in his weird mother issue trauma whatever.

I don't know how to tell someone that what they're writing isn't good when they're obviously using it for trauma dumping purposes.
