How does Wizard Knight stack up against Gene Wolfe's other works? I read it a few years ago and didn't really feel that invested in it. Wondering if it's worth checking out his other stuff or if he's maybe just not for me.

I need fantasy recommendations in the following specific niches:

>court intrigue with female assassins
>one PoV character is pursuing / investigating another PoV character without knowing their identity
>magic school shenanigans
>meteoric rise of a military genius
>ninjas

Stories should feature at least one niche in a big way. Not necessarily as the main focus, but not like one brief mention.

Already read:
>Black Magician
>Name of the Wind + sequel
>Daughter of the Empire trilogy
>pretty much every major epic fantasy series by a big name author
>bunch of Vance stuff
>Wolfe stuff

They help plug a few holes in the lore, but there's so much of it you won't miss a few. There's one character death that I couldn't believe was in a spin-off, that might leave you scratching your head when it gets mentioned in the Erikson books, but that's all I can think of.

LOTR and Narnia would qualify under both definitions as far as I'm concerned, yes.
>>22847857
The point is Current Year. Where one draws a line is obviously going to vary from person to person, but the further one moves back from Current Year the more likely something considered progressive at the time might be considered conservative or neutral in tone by readers now. If you're looking for a more objective definition, that's a fool's errand when the entire point of the first definition I gave was to be a purely practical "this is what the people asking for it generally want" thing. It could be shortened to "something they find un-pozzed, and they know it when they see it" but you'd probably find that even less satisfying.
>>22847867
If anything my definitions are far too nebulous and broad (though I think that's unavoidable). re: the other part of what you're saying, hard to believe that's your takeaway on how I think if you actually read my post. Read this again: "obviously what exactly qualifies will vary from person to person the same way people disagree on what genuine 'progressive fantasy' is."

My point was that people draw the line in different places, have different ideas of what constitutes "progressive/conservative enough" ideas and values, etc. Best one can do is point at things which on average will be viewed as one or the other. The definitions were also very content-focused and have very little to do with people liking or disliking a work — plenty of liberals like Narnia, plenty of conservatives like sf/f with broadly progressive attitudes. People only seem to really loathe the other side's fiction when it's shit, extremely aggressive in presentation of its ideology, or doesn't have much meat to it aside from the ideological purpose.

I did when I was in middle school (?). It's for children and it shows, the plot and characters are good but it's nothing groundbreaking. If I recall correctly, the story takes place in an AU with demons and mages have to pact with them in order to use magic. In order to control them, the mage must know the demon's name but the demon can subvert this if they know the mage real name. There's two protagonists, one is your typical boo hoo magic boy and the other is a demon, the latter's chapters are narrated in first-person while the former are narrated in third-person.
I think it was ok if you just want a "orphan suffers and is looking for something so he does magic" kind of story.

>Jia Jin Sheng was stunned on the spot, his face frozen with shock.
>“A Rank five powerhouse, the Flower Wine Monk’s inheritance!”
>He was stunned, and for a moment his brains were churning and thinking.
>“My god! A Rank five powerhouse, what does that mean? Rank three is a family elder, Rank four is a village lord, and a Rank five is a mountain lord, able to rule over a mountain and do as he pleases! To think that in this tiny place, there is a Rank five Gu Master’s power inheritance.”
>“Wait, Flower Wine Monk is a demonic cultivator, so if I inherit his powers, is it inappropriate? No, strength has nothing to do with good or evil. The Flower Wine Monk wants his successor to destroy the Gu Yue clan, but do I really have to? He’s already dead, I just have to take his inheritance and ignore those issues.”
>“This is a godsend opportunity. Even with my D grade talent, if I inherit the Flower Wine Monk’s inheritance, I might be able to improve my talent. Those rare talent-raising Gu worms, they might be part of the inheritance. If I inherit this fortune and become a Rank four or five Gu Master, I’d be able to contest with Jia Fu!”
>“Wait! I almost forgot, there’s an outsider, what should I do?”
>“Should I split the inheritance with him? No, kill him! Only by killing him can I protect this secret. Yes, I should calm him down first, and lie that we’re going to split the treasure. Getting rid of his guard, then assaulting him and killing him here. This place is so hidden, it’s great. Even if I kill him, nobody would know.”
>Although he thought of all these, it was merely a moment in real life.
>Having a plan, he squinted and revealed a fake smile.
>He slowly turned around and faced Fang Yuan but just as he was about to speak, he saw two blue moonblades flying towards him.
>His pupils dilated into the size of a pin; the distance was too small, he could not respond in time!
>“You……” His voice came to a halt.
>The moonblade aimed accurately for his neck, and in an instant, his skull flew into the air, fresh blood pouring out like a fountain.
>After two seconds, his corpse fell to the ground.
>The scalding blood poured on the mountain walls, dyeing the withering vines red.
>“Don’t think so much when killing people.”
>Fang Yuan looked at the corpse plainly and then shifted his gaze towards the image wall.

I'm reading Wheel of Time, and I'm started on Book 9. Winter's Heart. And I'm just curious, what the hell does it mean for Elayne to take the Lion throne? The narrative keeps emphasizing that. she has to TAKE the Lion throne. But like, her mom just had it some months ago. The throne should be rightfully hers through birthright. I don't get what's stopping her from just moving into the queen's chambers and announcing herself queen.

Also, I swear Robert Jordan has a weird idea of what's important to emphasize or not. There are a hundred mentions of women sniffing in derision. Half a hundred mentions of pouty and petulant mouths. A few dozen mentions of Nynaeve tugging her braid. And a dozen mentions of Elayne looking down her nose. But then he kills of a fairly major dark friend in like two pages, with only a couple mentions of his name, and not even emphasizing who he was. If you're not really paying attention, you could miss it. I feel like he really dropped the ball there.

Also, I'm still not sure why Dashiva tried to kill rand. in the last book. It comes out of nowhere, and then seems to be unresolved. I guess I'll find out later. But I'm very unsatisfied right now. In fact, I'm starting to see why these middle books feel like a drag. It's because in the first like 5 or so books, all the plots more or less resolved themselves within the same book. But ever since the bowl of the winds was introduced, it's like all of the plotlines are tattered. Remaining unresolved until future books, where it's still yet unresolved. The mysteries keep piling up. Except that the books are so long I forget what the mysteries are by the time they're resolved. So when Robert Jordan resolves the mysteries with a light touch, I'm just like "wait, was that something I should care about?" "Wait, who was that name again?" "Wait, what was their motive before?"

If he spent a little more time reinforcing important details, and less time mentioning who vomited, patted their skirts, and sniffed, then maybe the plot would be easier to follow and more enjoyable.

Anyway, what the fuck does it mean to "take" the Lion throne? Take from who? No one occupies it.

>Reverend Insanity = Literally about an a-moral bugman killing/consooming/cultivating
>Lord of The Mysteries = Boring asian steampunk with a tarot magic system for card fags
>Neuromancer = Decent cyberspunk i'm putting together a team novel
>Hyperion = Interplanetary high tech trooning
>The Prince of Nothing = Bakker is for fags and fags are for Bakker. Simple as.
>The Wandering Inn = Stay at home moms power fantasy with a main character whos most prominent power is complaining while being a pacivist.
>Between Two Fires = Heaven Vs hell but in medievil FRANCE!
>Mother of Learning = Time loop and like all of the subgenre goes literally nowhere over and over again, has a decent magic system and a main characters sister that is annoying as fuck.
>Cradle = Every second novel is a dud in the series with a birdbath of a main character. Only decent thing is the fights that get stale real quick because it does not take long to realise they are all ill conceived magical games of uno.
>I Shall Seal the Heavens = Proto xianxia at its worst, MC gets kidnapped into strong but lowly down on its luck sect. Queue haughty young masters, saving face and swilling genseng infused tiger penis soup by the gallon.
>A Song of Ice and Fire = Fantastical medievil degeneracy where the caracters who should live die and the characters who should die live. Also author is too busy getting fat and old to finish the series.
>The Poppy War = Fem-C gets accepted to 20th century china-esque martial academy and gets looked down upon while struggling to overcome amidst pseudo researched equally vintage china political bullshit.

>Azarinth Healer = Starts good but fizzles hard midway. Author also makes the main character a low key lesbian because they clearly have no idea hat to do with their love life.
>Primal Hunter = MC+background is so impossibly nonsensical that he's not even cannon in his own setting.
>He Who Fights with Monsters = every character that isnt the MC is just there to be amazed at how smart Jason is while he tells them shit they already know before reminding them (incorrectly i might add) that 'Oh you have no idea".
>Dungeon Crawler Carl = The MC's sidekick (A cat named 'Princess Donut') is so much smarter than Carl (the MC) that every scene the two are in is eye-gougingly painful. This would not be so much of a problem if such scenes did not constitute the majority of the series.
>System Universe = After the initial premise is established it turns into how to pander to followers at a snails pace AKA; 'Filler McFiller Face - The Excessively Extended Sleep Inducing Saga'.
>Dissonance = MC gets god fucked more then once as he goes about becoming a man/bear/goat/pig/axolotl hybrid who also has many super sekret identities.
>Defiance of the Fall = Brain dead MC with very-much-just-barely opposed kingdom building with a wafer thin cultivation system
>Iron Prince = edgy school setting with even edgier MC who has lightning powers and no discernible challenges what so ever.

>Beware of Chicken = 'Average' dude gets isekaied into cultivation universe where he runs away from conflict and strives for basic farming life that simultaneously grants him power, thirsty bitches, farm animals(OP spirit beasts) and bling(natural treasures). A working stiffs escapism fantasy where they can morally fence sit and be granted everything their current life denies them.
>Memoirs of Your Local Small-time Villainess = The writing has no right being as good as it is considering the premise, Its main pitfall is the world-building done by reminiscence of how the game world is supposed to be from the MC's MANY play-through recollections. Basically a time loop/reincarnation in disguise where the MC knows all the spechul sekrets.
>Deathworld Commando: Reborn = If you can make it through the four(4) chapters of prologue mainly consisting of esl tier dialogue and character descriptions then this stories for you! Think worst spache muhreen ever thrown into an anime isekai as an elf hybrid. Epitome of telling rather than showing
>The Butcher of Gadobhra = Multi-POV VRMMO where the stats and effects are made up and the character progression doesnt matter. Starts with a pseudo-prisoner arc where pointless restrictions are placed on the main characters for which they have to find workarounds. Slow progression comedy where the dialogue has more thought put into it then the fight scenes.
>The Laws of Cultivation: Qi = MC^2 = Budding scientist gets isekai'd into cultivation world, if not for that one small character difference, in the beginning at least, it could be a carbon copy of Beware of Chicken without the agronomy hard on and a boner for great science(alchemy) instead. Also lets not forget the pokemon (spirit animals) because why the fuck not? Highly repetitive.
>Fodder = Step 1) Do bad things - Step 2) Get relifed as gobbo - Step 3) ??? - Step 4) Profit - Caution lots of POV shifting
>12 Miles Below = First book is humans in power armor vs murder machines kino. Book 2 onwards morphs into how to tame a tsundere robotfu, too much political intuige with a scant couple of drawn out fights thrown in and infruiating POV shifting. The world lore is fantastic but the MC doesnt start to go near any really interesting stuff until book four which is still highly curtailed.
>Immortality Starts With Generosity = Arranged marrige xiania but what if instead of being rewarded for being a power hungry douchebag you got bonus points(Qi) for being a goody two shoes?
>A Soldier Adrift: Captain Westeros = Captain america fan-fiction slop meets game of thrones fan-fiction slop
>War Queen = We wuz(arez) alien space bugas n shit. Half decent writing tbqh
>Worth the Candle = Guy gets summoned into a tabletop campaign he created with his now dead friend. Picks up a couple of plot armoured companions on the way as they explore the world (whilst on the run from some A typical goons) and MC (eventually) overcomes his depression whilst not getting any.

If I were you, I’d want to have a dozen books under contract, so you can keep writing these for the next twenty years.”
>That might have been the smart business decision, but I rejected it immediately—because that wasn’t what the Wheel of Time needed. Just finished this. What did I think of it? Well I liked it; just like the first novel. Best way I could describe this series is Edgy Horror Adventure Fantasy That Isn't Subversive Or Nihilistic. I generally don't enjoy reading 'edgy' literature anymore since 99% of it these days IS nihilistic and/or subversive which bores me to tears. Or it's edgy for the sake of being edgy with nothing else beyond that. But this series is different despite all the edge. I'm not even sure what type of anons I would recommend these books too. It has a very strong S&S vibe without technically being S&S (normal male protag gets dropped into a world of absolute horror and is forced to become a savage killer so he can rescue his woman and find a way to escape).

>Pilling up unresolved plot over 6 books and then dying is a joke
True. I was talking about Jaichim Carridin btw. AKA "Bors." Now that I think about it, In book 6(or was it 7? They run together), there was a good chunk of text dedicated to setting up a new scheme of his. New plotting. The bad guy visits him and basically tells him "you failed for the last time. Do it right this time!" in so many words. Then, off screen, he somehow fails. One of his plots goes awry. I don't know which, because RJ doesn't seem to care about explaining which random henchmen was ordered by which random higher ranked darkfriend. But SOMEHOW he fails again.

Then in book 8, there's like 2 pages of introducing a new dark friend by way of killing the one that failed. And the new guy doesn't even recognize the old guy. I guess that's supposed to be some kind of irony. But I still feel like there should have been a more satisfying end to the guy.

There's probably more text dedicated to Min's tight britches, than what the dark friend got at the end.

It just doesn't make sense. When there is a power vacuum, someone inevitably comes along to fill it. If any of the lords are powerful enough to defend the throne against someone who would claim it, then at least one of the lords has the power to take it themselves. And if the other lords think they have the power to challenge you? Well, chances are they would acquiesce in order to avoid mutual self destruction.

I mean, whoever is acting as custodian for the castle while the throne is vacant is near enough to owning the throne anyway. If you're close enough to dust the throne, you're close enough to claim it.

yeah, the henchmen themselves are barely aware of what they're doing, and the higher ranked ones are only slightly more so.
Even the Forsaken have a few "sure boss whatever you say" scenes, to the point that every conflict feels...somewhat coincidental, instead of a directed effort into hindering the good guys.

Yeah. A few mentions of his drinking was dropped in previous books. So it's supposed to be an ironic end that he died in drink. But his drinking wasn't really a highlight of his character. His position as inquisitor was. RJ spent a fair amount of pages hyping that group up, only to make the man's drinking his defining feature at the end. If you didn't catch that, then I'm not sure what else was supposed to indicate it was him.

>If I remember right, Moridin only found out the Bowl of the Winds could _maybe_ do _something_ after Elayne had it, but another Forsaken already knew, since they sent the Golem to grab it
That could be it. I'm not sure exactly. But someone knew about the whole store of Angreal and other old artifacts that were kept in Ebou Dar. Which I believe ended up being the same storeroom that the bowl was kept in. So they all seemed to merge into this single shitstorm at the storeroom. The Golem side seems to have made off with a number of things. But Elayne and Nynaeve leave with the bowl, and a large share of the stowed artifacts.

If my first had been The Color of Magic I never would have read another Adams book in my life.

Overall I'd say Discworld is a mixed bag. Some a ton of fun, others just don't hold up well anymore (usually the ones which focus the most on parodying something specific and then-current), and a few simply not good even at the time.

Another observation. Elayne is a lot taller than I imagine. I don't know why, but I always think of her as average height. But book 9 reminds us of relative height once again. Here's the height rank for the main girls.

1. Aviendha is the tallest.
2. Elayne is under Avienda, but not by much surprisingly. They're close in height. When Elayne "looks down her nose", that's a literal description when she's looking at many characters.
3. Min? I'm not totally sure, but her height isn't emphasized, so I think she's somewhere in the middle.
4. Birgitte. I'm shocked to hear her described as shorter than Elayne. IDK, I just figured since she's older and more experienced, she would be taller too. But no, Birgitte is average height. Maybe even a little under average.
5. Egwene. She's "of a height" with Nynaeve, but slightly taller I think. Since her smallness is never emphasized.
6. Nynaeve. She seems to get shorter with every book. More and more a gremlin. She's noticeably below average. Near to Moiraine.
7. Moiraine is of course the smallest. Nearly dwarfen.(technically, people can be described as dwarfs, if they're 4'10'' and under)

The rest is correct.
You're right in general that it's easy to forget their heights. Min in particular I always imagine as tiny but even she towers over Nynaeve. It might have something to do with the fact that Rand is a gigachad giant so everyone is small next to him.

That's probably it. Everyone is always looking up at him.

I got to the part where Elayne is suddenly summoned, while she's in a room of all these important people. And she has to undress to change clothes too. During the sequence, all the girls line up to block the view from the guys as she changes. She notes how the shield of women isn't doing much, because none of them are as tall as her, including Birgitte. Merilille not even coming up to Elayne's shoulder. The funny thing is, they could have just woven a visual barrier using the power. There were like 4 saidar users there. Merilille a seasoned Aes Sedai. Surely she knows how to conceal. But then again, maybe not. What Aes Sedai know seems to vary a lot. Especially considering how long it takes for them to each the Shawl. You would think they would all know more of the same tricks.

oh, I'm silly. It's actually the beginning of book 8 that described their heights. That's how much the books are mushing together for me. Anyway, I found the text:
>The raised heels of Birgitte’s boots made her almost a hand taller than Nynaeve, if still shorter than Elayne or Aviendha.

This is interesting text, because a hand is only a few inches. Like 3-5 I guess? Let's go with 4, because that's what the wiki says. Anyway, to be *almost* a hand taller, that means she comes up shorter than a hand. So let's say Birgitte is 3 inches taller than Nynaeve with raised heels. I suppose the heels aren't very tall, because she still has to perform as a Warder. Birgitte tends to dress practically for the most part, save special occasions. So let's say her boots are an inch higher than normal boots. Meaning that Birgitte is only about 2 inches taller than Nynaeve. Less, if we assume her heels are even taller. But I doubt that's the case.

Also, while I was searching for text in book 9, I stumbled into text that's ahead of where I'm currently reading. But it's relevant.
>Eyeing Min sideways, Elayne remembered her own time wearing breeches, and wondered whether she might not try again. They were certainly freer than skirts. Not the heeled boots, though, she decided judiciously. They made Min almost as tall as Aviendha, but even Birgitte swayed in those, and with Min’s snug breeches and a coat that barely covered her hips, it looked positively scandalous.

Basically, Elayne notes that Min's heels make her nearly as tall as Aviendha, but she doesn't think the same about Birgitte. For Birgitte, she says "but even" she sways. That "but even" suggests that what was just said about Min's height, can't be said about Birgitte.

So Yeah, I'm thinking Min is taller than Birgitte. And Birgitte might actually be a little on the short side, if she's merely 2 inches above Nynaeve.

They all managed to walk over to her before Elayne got half her clothes off. It's a little vague exactly how much she took off between paragraphs. But it would seem to me that she just barely got the buttons undone before they ladies make a screen with their bodies. It doesn't take time to weave a screen at all. Rand regularly erects a screen in a second. Merilille doesn't understand what's going on, which is all the more reason why she would weave a screen, rather than use her body to screen. Because she wouldn't know that the modesty is shaming in Aiel culture. From Merilille's perspective, all she knows is that Taim and the Asha'man are in the room, and they're unified at keeping Elayne modest. The most expedient and effective way to do that, is weave a screen. Not try to block Elayne with your body, when you're hardly reach Elayne's shoulder in height.

more powerful channelers are more skilled at weaving. rand is in the top level for males while merillile is relatively low

but anon the asha'man already turned around so if i were merillile then i would just stand guard. doing a screen is overkill

I'm reading the third Wheel of Time Dragon Reborn and Rand just killed a bunch of people. Like maybe they were dark friend illusions or disguises but I feel like till now it's been fairly clear if something was fake or not and their arrival was treated totally matter of factly.
I'm reading this for the sake of my dad who loves them and until now I've found them fairly intolerable but this is the first one where I feel embers of interest sparking.

>more powerful channelers are more skilled at weaving. rand is in the top level for males while merillile is relatively low
The narrative constantly reminds the reader that the experience of seasoned Aes Sedai could match or exceed an Asha'man in skill with the power. Men can overtake women in raw strength since they're so much stronger. But weaving takes a certain level of dexterity. And that dexterity is not limited or bolstered by one's power. For example, how one of the Kin manages to shield Elayne despite her power being minuscule. She manages this because her shield is flexible, so Elayne can't simply break it by flexing her power.
Someone who is as old as Merilille should have a lot of experience and be deft at using many weaves. So assuming that she knows how to make a screen, it should be as quick or quicker than walking.
Take for example how when the characters were learning their powers, they would sometimes forget they can just float a cup over to them in stead of walking to get it. That's how much faster it is to use the power than the body.

Also female channelers regularly pull weaves out as quick as throwing a knife. Or prepare weaves in a second, ready to use.

>but anon the asha'man already turned around so if i were merillile then i would just stand guard. doing a screen is overkill
They turn around BEFORE the girls make a screen with their bodies. So clearly, going "overkill" with modesty was not a concern for the women. If she was going to make a screen with her body, then she might as well make one with the power. The power that she's already holding by the way.

There can only be two reasons why she didn't use the weave.
A. She doesn't know it. In which case, the white tower really dropped the ball there.
B. Robert Jordan just didn't think of it. Or perhaps he did think of it, but decided against it, because narratively the body shield has more impact.
