Why did the author go on a chapter long tirade about *yikes* spanking children

>> No.22840122

That is pretty much Heinlein in a nutshell and why he gets almost no attention from anyone but plotfags. His attempts at incorporating theme are childish at best, but he is fun and if you don't think too hard about his work it can be surprisingly insightful.

Didn't seem long to me.
Also didn't feel out of place in the book.

>Has perfect opportunity to depict a character displaying the morals, values and positions he is trying to convey
>Refuses to do this and instead has a author-doctor-lawyer self-insert character dictate directly to you, the reader, why his positions is superior in this situation
>Happens several times in every novel he writes

Armor, by Steakley is actually a good book about what people think Starship Troopers is about.

Heinlein is a pedophile, as seen clearly from many of his works.

This is the real reason people in power despise Fascism.

I like that cover design but it’s the first edition that costs $500 bucks unfortunately

tbf, even War and Peace is interrupted by Tolstoy inserting his essays on what he thinks about Boney, the revolution and the randomness of war and tactical success. I imagine the /lit/ anons from back in the day had the same debates while reading the newest periodical on the park bench

Because not spanking children is why there were liberals and liberals are why the space navy had to take over.

That's like a half of why he's popular with YAs.

Tolstoy is alright in that regard with War and Peace because in War and Peace it feels like he's sharing he's perspective. It's in the later works that he becomes the
>"ok STUPID now listen here STUPID maybe some of my wisdom can make it through your STUPID skull into this STUPID brain of yours and make you a tiniest bit less STUPID"
asshole didactic.

I had a visceral cringe moment about ST when reading it back when I was 15-ish specifically at that part with Dubois where he explains to he kids that they must be severely punished for their mistakes because if they have dogs, they know that's how you must train dogs - otherwise they won't learn.

And it legitimately felt like that was the way Heinlein unironically thought at the time. He's cool, and his perpetual aggressive lack of self-awareness is like a key part of that cool.

Why the hell do publishers do this? Is there a market for people who buy excessively overpriced books?

Pretty sure he's just exploring the implications of the book's setting. An ordered society where everyone is expected to uphold the virtues of the civilization, starting in the home. Society would be unironically better if we held parents to account for the actions of their children in one way or another.

Yes, they are fucking idiots that need to he told explicitly instead through subtle and repeated displays and reactions.
