If I'm being charitable, it looks like he is saying it possesses the person who engages in it and that its brought on by a figment of the mind that becomes obsessive. Thats not that crazy.
The reason people refer to Magick as real is because of this:
You have an unconscious mind, that cannot ever be consciously observed by you, but will always compete for the attention of your conscious mind, versus whatever you are using your will to try and direct attention at. The direct implication of this is that you literally don't and could never know the abyss that parts of yourself come out of and possess parts of who you wish to be. The more you can gain control over your will, the more power you have to be what you want to be.
The metaphysical part of it isn't even that crazy either, because if your mind is interfacing with an abyss that you can't know, where the fuck does that come from, and what are its methods?
