Martial World - Depths of the Abyss. The penultimate chapter. The writing for this book dropped off a bit but there were many resolutions to dangling plot concerns. This is the longest xianxia I've read and in ~100 chapters, it'll all be over.
The last actual novel was Solar Lottery, about a society ran by random occurrence elevating a random person to the title and position of Quizmaster, which much power, and the corresponding publicized legal reaction of the previous Quizmaster employing an assassin, one at a time, against the new one. The assassin in this novel was thematic to PKD tales, being an android inhabited by ~12 different people employed through the previous Quizmaster, with the goal to assume control through random intervals, to throw off any attempts at prediction and ensure a successful assassination. It also held the concept of fiefdom to individuals in the background lore.

Rereading Tales of the Dying Earth. I read it in 2015 and don't remember shit. As much as I enjoy shitting on Vancefags, I find myself having to look up words every other page--which has been a rather uncommon reading experience--which may be my biggest allure. I'm early on, wrapping up Guyal of Sfere's story. I also finished Mirai Nikki which was utter nonsense but Yuno is hot.
>next
lolidk maybe I'll finish MW. I'm thinking I'll read into Cugel's Saga and go from there with DE. I only ever read that far 8 years ago.

>It all began when Pat Rothfuss was born to a marvelous set of parents. Throughout his formative years they encouraged him to do his best, gave him good advice, and were no doubt appropriately dismayed when he failed to live up to his full potential.
>In high-school Pat was something of a class clown. His hobbies included reading a novel or two a day and giving relationship advice to all his friends despite the fact that he had never so much as kissed a girl. He also role-played and wrote terrible stories about elves. He was pretty much a geek.
>Most of Pat's adult life has been spent in the University Wisconsin Stevens Point. In 1991 he started college in order to pursue a career in chemical engineering, then he considered clinical psychology. In 1993 he quit pretending he knew what he wanted to do with his life, changed his major to "undecided," and proceeded to study whatever amused him. He also began writing a book....
>For the next seven years Pat studied anthropology, philosophy, eastern religions, history, alchemy, parapsychology, literature, and writing. He studied six different martial arts, practiced improv comedy, learned how to pick locks, and became a skilled lover of women. He also began writing a satirical advice column which he continues to this day: The College Survivial Guide. Through all of this he continued to work on his novel.
>In 2000 Pat went to grad school for English literature. Grad school sucked and Pat hated it. However, Pat learned that he loved to teach. He left in 2002 with his masters degree, shaking the dust from his feet and vowing never to return. During this period of time his novel was rejected by roughly every agent in the known universe.
>Now Pat teaches half-time at his old school as an assistant-sub-lecturer. He is underpaid but generally left alone to do as he sees fit with his classes. He is advisor for the college feminists, the fencing club, and, oddly enough, a sorority. He still roll-plays occasionally, but now he does it in an extremely sophisticated, debonair way.
>Through a series of lucky breaks, he has wound up with the best agent and editor imaginable, and the first book of his trilogy has been published under the title "The Name of the Wind."
>Though it has only been out since April 2007, it has already been sold in 26 foreign countries and won several awards.
>Pat has been described as "a rough, earthy iconoclast with a pipeline to the divine in everyone's subconscious." But honestly, that person was pretty drunk at the time, so you might want to take it with a grain of salt.

My theory is that most people here haven't developed any discipline, because they got addicted to reading goyslop, so, like the first post itt, they can't read through an entire xianxia series in a few sittings.
It's like how you can't lift heavy weights if you don't train. You can't do advanced math if you don't practice the basics, you can't write large programs if you don't practice with smaller ones. They have been completely mind-broken by trite formulaic goyslop, that they don't accept books that don't follow an extremely tired and basic formula (as well as prodding all the same liberal tendencies) as "real novels".

Never read him myself, but when I worked as a librarian specifically with hospital patients, elderly in care facilities and psychiatric patients, one of the customers was a guy connected to a respirator who wasn't interested in anything unless it was Rothfuss' next, long awaited book. By the look of him when I last saw him, he died while still waiting for that next book to be finished.

>Lord of The Mysteries = Boring asian steampunk with a tarot magic system for card fags
>Neuromancer = Decent cyberspunk i'm putting together a team novel
>Hyperion = Interplanetary high tech trooning
>The Prince of Nothing = Bakker is for fags and fags are for Bakker.
>The Wandering Inn = Stay at home moms power fantasy with a main character whos most prominent power is complaining while being a pacivist.
>Between Two Fires = Heaven Vs hell but in medievil FRANCE!
>Mother of Learning = Time loop and like all of the subgenre goes literally nowhere over and over again, has a decent magic system and a main characters sister that is annoying as fuck.
>Cradle = Every second novel is a dud in the series with a birdbath of a main character. Only decent thing is the fights that get stale real quick because it does not take long to realise they are all ill conceived magical games of uno.
>I Shall Seal the Heavens = Proto xianxia at its worst, MC gets kidnapped into strong but lowly down on its luck sect. Que haughty young masters, saving face and swilling genseng infused tiger penis soup by the gallon.
>A Song of Ice and Fire = Fantastical medievil degeneracy where they caracters who should live die and the characters who whould die live. Also author is too busy getting fat and old to finish the series.
>The Poppy War = Fem-C gets accepted to 20th century china-esque martial academy and gets looked down upon while struggling to overcome amidst pseudo researched equally vintage china political bullshit.

>Azarinth Healer = Starts good but fizzles hard midway. Author also makes the main character a low key lesbian because they clearly have no idea hat to do with their love life.
>Primal Hunter = MC+background is so impossibly nonsensical that he's not even cannon in his own setting.
>He Who Fights with Monsters = every character that isnt the MC is just there to be amazed at how smart Jason is while he tells them shit they already know before reminding them (incorrectly i might add) that 'Oh you have no idea".
>Dungeon Crawler Carl = The MC's sidekick (A cat named 'Princess Donut') is so much smarter than Carl (the MC) that every scene the two are in is eye-gougingly painful. This would not be so much of a problem if such scenes did not constitute the majority of the series.
>System Universe = After the initial premise is established it turns into how to pander to followers at a snails pace AKA; 'Filler McFiller Face - The Excessively Extended Sleep Inducing Saga'.
>Dissonance = MC gets god fucked more then once as he goes about becoming a man/bear/goat/pig/axolotl hybrid who also has many super sekret identities.
>Defiance of the Fall = Brain dead MC with very-much-just-barely opposed kingdom building with a wafer thin cultivation system
>Iron Prince = edgy school setting with even edgier MC who has lightning powers and no discernible challenges what so ever.

It's the setting I was shilling with an infographic prime. Granted, the primer didn't cover the archaeologist story arc.
tl;dr is a satellite of matter from the moon's ring falls to a planet with early gunpower tech and shatters into several pieces. Turns out it's the magic version of plutonium and triggers an arms race between rival factions.
Meanwhile, a team of archaeologists from the part of the world with early gunpower tech and a nascent industrial revolution are being manipulated by their benefactors (Shadow Wizard Money Gang) to venture to forlorn corners of the continent and plunder its ancient forgotten ruins to uncover the secrets behind this space matter and how a similar event 2000 years ago collapsed a cluster of thriving civilizations and ushered in a dark age.
But really, it's all about the importance of family, whatever form it takes :^)

Anyone read the Ash and Sand series? It's pretty good despite the terrible cover. Main character is a magic user in a world where magic is almost non-existent. MC has a pocket grove in his mind that fills up with all the people he kills. They can build infrastructure and force weapons etc for him and he can bring them over to the real world. I thought it was pretty cool.

Finished 'deepness in the sky' by Vernor Vinge.

5/5

This concludes my journey in 'The Zones of Thought', I have now read all three books.
(unless I read Joan D. Vinge's novel 'The Outcasts of Heaven Belt' or 'Babel' by Vernor Vinge.)

It was a rather long book and took longer to arrive at the peak action than any other in the series. It also had less enjoyable deviations than the others, but I also enjoy the doggos and the gossipers on the middle transcend net.

The characters are all really well portrayed and you do actually learn to like them and know all about them, like, not many books make me actually understand and care for this many characters.

Hell most books I couldn't name the characters, I literally finished hyperion 1-2 days ago and I only remember the consul, saia (the Hawaiian island girl?? I know I fucked it up), m letson?, the shrike doesn't fucking count.

I'm not saying hyperion characters were bad, I'm just saying that these characters really grew on you.

Vernor Vinge loves betrayels, secrets, manipulation, double agents, triple agents, twists and turns and plots on plots within plots. Okay maybe not that much but this book is classic Vinge in that way.

Suspense wise? A Fire Upon the deep is still miles ahead of this, that book had me literally frantically turning pages like a mad man at the end of the book to see what was happening.

Quick tier list
1, a fire upon the deep
2, children of the sky
3, a deepness in the sky
I feel bad about putting it at third. I really want to just put both of them at 2nd place.

Spoiler review
I'm going to really miss Pham, he actually feels so much more grounded than other MC heroes. He wants the focus so bad but gives it up etc. I suppose the ending of the book means he beat the emergents and headed into the core of the galaxy, this is where he was then rescued and brought into 'a fire upon the deep', I wish we knew what happened to him more. I wish we knew what happened to the spiders, I wish vernor Vinge had enough energy to write 10 more novels. It feels like a giant galaxy that could easily be expanded upon at every corner. Okay anyways, this book was certainly dark at some points, qiwis mom getting raped and murdered and her daughter reliving the experience of finding the video tapes over and over before being mindscrubbed was so quick in reference but it sticks with you so much. Pham nuwens back story and childhood, damn this book has sooo much content. My review is probably all over the place but there was a lot here.

I give up describing it. It was amazing.

It's what it says on the tin. "Building the world your story inhabits." It's usually applied to fictional universes in sci-fi and fantasy, but those same principles also applied to non-SF/F fiction. Almost all works of fiction utilize some form of worldbuilding to establish the dynamics and atmosphere that govern the tone and themes of the story. Designing a fictional fantasy planet with its own history, cultures, cosmology, etc. is worldbuilding. So is setting a story entirely within a dive bar by a truck stop in Nebraska off I-80 circa 1987 and establishing the dynamics between the bar's employees, its regulars, and the history of the bar from the scorch mark by the fuse box to the neon sign advertising a beer that went out of production in 1979 to the torn, beer-stained pool table to the stall door that got broken in a bathroom fight 3 years ago.

I read 'A Fire Upon the deep' on my phone (note 20 ultra) and listened to the audio book while I read sometimes (often out pacing the narrator).

I read 'Children of the sky' and 'a deepness in the sky' as physical books from the library (I even did a purchase request for 'children of the sky' and they ordered it for me) and also listened to it as an audio book either while I was reading or by itself.

Like other anons said, ebooks from libgen etc. Audiobooks from audiobookbay.

And library card from my city taxes.

If you haven't been to your library, give it a shot, some are way better than others but I live in a town of 1mil USA and my library fucking rules. Has a sick app, 99 books can be checked out, all types of benefits.

>>22825788
Reading on an actual computer might be harder, it's been awhile since I tried. Maybe try with the audio book playing at the same time, you can even try to match the narrator speed to your own reading.

I tried a Kindle and read quite a few books that way, I enjoy a real book but Kindle or phone work as well.

I don't think it's impressive to read faster than a narrator, I'm just noting that you'll encounter this so you should use an audio book player that has adjustable speed playback if it bothers you.

Sometimes I don't find it distracting when the narrator is 10 pages behind my reading and it's just sort of background noise but I'm also play podcasts and shit 24/7 basically, I'm probably a zoomer.

I've looked at all the major brands, boox, paper-white etc etc. I really liked the kindle battery life and the size was just okay, but I kind of want something larger and can maybe do color. It's not a basic component though, it's explicitly something a gm does to accomadate for not knowing where the players want to take the story. They build the world before the fiction out of necessity.
It has no relation to competent fiction writing where the setting is revealed as and when it is relevant to the narrative.
