I haven’t yet, but I worry about it a lot. I don’t care about being rich. Sure, it would be nice to be able to earn a living as a writer. Mostly, I just want to write something good that outlives me. I can’t help but be ambitious even though I don’t exactly have the background of a great writer.

I always knew that. I have had recently however to unrealise it, or to unrealise the notion that that is an obstacle. I have now decided that I have to write something, so I will write it. Whether anyone ever reads it is somewhat immaterial to what I am trying to do, aside from the fact that I may need eventually to sustain myself by making money.

I don't mind. All I need is for my books to have their fans and that I earn enough income to at least fully fund a SEP IRA every year. For every great author there must be hundreds that we never heard of and might never hear of. For every rich author there are the same hundreds. Few authors are great and rich though, so that doubles your odds of being one or the other in a way.
