I'm reading this right now actually. I read Issacson's biography of Benjamin Franklin directly before and Adams was indeed depicted as a prick. Nonetheless, he did become the 2nd president. Was there any good parts in the biography at least?

>> No.22804432

>>22804409
Tbh the most interesting stuff imo is when Adams is emissary to Europe during the revolution. His presidency is kind of interesting, you have the whole quasi-war with France; theres some interesting stuff about French espionage in America if I remember correctly. The Alien and Seditions acts debate is a thing.
It's not like John Adams is an actually boring historical figure. The arc of his career is long, so by following his life you are covering a very respectable chronology of America. He's only boring if you compare him to other Founding Fathers, which you cannot help but do.
I also think Mccullough is a somewhat mediocre stylist, he reminds me of Robert Massie and Andrew Roberts in that their books cover great subjects but the books themselves are not individually great. Earlier the Ron Chernow Alexander Hamilton was posted: Chernow is an excellent stylist compared with those two other guys, imo.

Yeah, Richardson really makes one feel Thoreau's youthfulness, paints a picture of him contrary to the usual perception of him as being perpetually rather old. In the case of James I hadn't realized what a 'late bloomer' he was, how much pressure Henry's early successes had exerted on him (almost to a standstill) and the weird effect he had on his sister Alice (who was probably in love with him until the day she miserably died)

Napoleon A Life is one of the best books I've read, I would say it does a good job of explaining the period and what was going on diplomatically while being a good biography

Roberts is more informative; Cronin is more literary. Anyway it doesn't really matter which Napoleon bio you read, by those two or otherwise.
Napoleon's life is in the absolute highest tier of 'interesting persons'; it is IMPOSSIBLE to fuck up a biography of Napoleon, it will ALWAYS be a fascinating read because he was a fascinating man. When a subject is great, the book follows suit.

I was very lucky to randomly open that book at a library and be confronted with a couple of pages worth where Caro goes deep into Sam Rayburn's backstory. Not anything too elegant, just wistful, dignified, sad. A man consumed by duty who watched over a former lover's children from afar, a man who had so much power yet wept because he never had a son to fish with. I don't know how he manages to find out all those small details, but he truly is a master.

Have the anons here had any luck in finding either the original text or the North translation? I‘m becoming a bit of a language purist and think my romance background will be good enough to flail through latin in a few years (at least for practice) but would also be interested in reading the version that influenced Shakespeare so heavily.

Strangely enough, especially for works which should be public domain, I have come up absolutely empty on both counts (without paying excessive costs for a fraction of the text.)
