we had to read of mice and men in school as kids.

what child would really be able to relate to any of the struggles the characters go through in this book?

what child cares about the death of the American dream?

Kids can relate to being kind to animals, and feel sympathy for a retard, and sadness over him being shot (I remember some girls in my class wept). That's about as deep as the book gets for a kid

who cares what uncurious, lazy children think
children open to questioning why and how are rewarded by good works of literature

Is there anything else in the book? I also read it in school and this is all I remember.

Yeah but they need to teach kids something a little higher brow so they have to go with midwit stuff like this

It's better than making kids read Shakespeare. I remember having a teacher wear combat boots and a jumpsuit every day for a good month while we read 1984, if a teacher has passion it can make anything interesting.
