Why exactly did the authors of the New Testament chose the year 0 as the date of birth for Jesus? Why not settle with the year 420BC, 69AD or some other cool number, like present year, 2022, or whatever?

How did they figure Jesus was born year 0? Was it because Caesar had kys'd in front of the senate? Was it the death of Cleopatra? Did a war or another significant event happen back then? Did the authors have more information about that era than any other? Did the chose the date because they calculated the stars and planets aligned? Was it at random?

How much impact have the year 0 had on the western society? Would we be more like the chinese if the birth of Jesus had happen year 3342 instead of year 0? Would we feel less or more smart if our present year would be year 4415 or something?

How do you feel about year 0? Is it a conspiracy? Do you care? Have you ever pondered about it?

Did they? I don't think they ever wrote that, that was likely imposed by Rome

Because Christ is King and it was usual to date things by the current year of the ruler. It's only around 400AD that the use became widespread. Previous Christians were just using either the date of foundation of Rome (753BC) or in the orient the Seleucid era (312BC).
>year 0
First of all there is no year 0 which wasn't used in mathematics yet. Second, they messed up the calculation and Jesus was born in 4BC. They noticed it very quickly but the new date had already gone into circulation so they just went along with it.
>How did they figure Jesus was born year 0?
Death of Herod the Great. The reason they messed it up is that ancient historians had contradictory information on this but the reliable sources point to 749/750 of the foundation of Rome.

>Christ is King and it was usual to date things by the current year of the ruler.
usual? what other religions use such metric?
>They noticed it
who are they?
>Death of Herod the Great
cool, thx, but why him and not some other cool dude like Alexander, Xenon or Buddha?

I mean rulers in general but if you want a religion islam also dates things from the time Muhammad became ruler in Medina.
>why him and not some other cool dude like Alexander, Xenon or Buddha?
Because the birth of Jesus happened just before the death of Herod.

They didn't. He was born 4BC.

what makes Herod so special?

doesn't this imply its Herod whos considered the ruler and the one who we date stuff after (since Jesus is no real man)?

Are you some sort of Jew?
The birth of Jesus is not long before the death of Herod in the Gospels. He's also "around 30 years old" in the 14th year of emperor Tiberius so 27AD. because there is no year 0 that makes for 4BC which is approximate.

No, why would I be?
I do recognize I'm being vague and deceptive with my dumb questions but I'm genuinely curious about Herod, what made him so special that the authors thought they'd base the birth of Jesus around his death. Did they have record of him and his acts and thought it'd make a great story, or were they picking a date at random and picked a person at random and made up a story at which they seem fit? perhaps a bit both?

Jesus wasn't born. He was invented.

Are you kidding? Jesus was born in 0AD because people decided to use his birth as the start of their calendar. No one at the time would have considered it 0AD. Your question is equivalent to asking why water just happens to freeze at zero degrees Celsius.

In the gospels it come naturally because Herod tries to have baby Jesus killed. He was afraid candidates for the Messiah position would overthrow his dynasty as earthly rulers in the Levant (this is quite in line with what we otherwise know of Herod but of course bad faith actors consider it "proof" that the episode is invented).
In any case it fits the age given for his public ministry so the birth happens around that time.

how do you feel about this choice? were the no other rulers in history of judea who were similair in thought as Herod? was the choice of place/time for year 0 smart or not?
