For starters, they're clearly the more Romantic sex who want to have their cake and eat it too. Notice how Faust, Manfred, and Victor Frankenstein are all effeminate in their demeanor. They do as they please and passionately, sensually, throw hurl themselves towards all consuming ambition yet recoil and beg for charity and respite at the precipice of oblivion.

Cats are nice, OP, but you still need to post your three top Faustian protagonists. Lead by example and I might offer a few myself.

>novel
The novel is undoubtedly the least Faustian of all literary forms. Who are your favourite protagonists from classical mythology, epic poems, ballads, limericks, plays, short stories, pantomimes, fables, jokes, tall tales, shaggy-dog-stories, campfire-style spine-chillers, opera, ballet, 4chan greentext, children's books, autobiographies, prose poems, songs, graphic novels, movie screenplays, real-life anecdotes, urban legends or other quasi-linguistic endeavours with some Faustian zip in their heels?

I have to admit I haven't heard of any of them. Hard to take D'Annunzio seriously. The middle guy seems a bit distasteful. The last one looks as though it might have promise.

Anyway, three for me:

Faustian in that he seeks knowledge even at the risk of his own sanity:
Odysseus (Homer)

Faustian in that he rejects the world and creates his own value:
Captain Nemo (Verne)

Faustian in that he is impelled, turbulently, ever onward:
Toad (Grahame) [see picture]

I was reading the autobiography of some guy who was assistant to Britain's hangman in the 1950s and he said the worst execution he ever took part it was some really fat guy and the force pulled his head off (lol).

Just a random thought: there are so many morbidly obese people these days, it might actually be hard to do proper hangings. You'd have ropes breaking, heads coming off everywhere.

>I don't understand

Obviously there's a typo. I meant "the worst execution he ever took part in".

I slightly misremembered the anecdote but not much. The author describes it but it was before his time. (Notice how, in 1885, a 15-stone man was considered outrageously obese, haha.)

The book is "The Hangman's Tale: Memoirs of a Public Executioner" by Syd Dernley.
