Like most Dick, starts strong, ends weak
Though PKD loved the movie (just before he died) it's essentially a different enterprise

Watch the penultimate cut first, and then read the book.

I liked it a lot, the book felt like a directors cut of the movie. It's my favorite PKD book and actually set a bad example for me with PKD because every other long novel he writes is fucking trash* and he ends the story by fucking it up on purpose and going "it was all a dream! Hahahaha" or some ass-pull shit.

Anyways, yeah it's good, definitely a must read in the cyberpunk genre and I'd still say go read more PKD like Ubik and just crack open a few volumes of his short story collections (all his short stories are good, PKD has drug induced brain rot and when he writes past 100 pages he goes insane).

Not science fiction. PKD just uses scifi as a vehicle for his ideas which are usually exploring what constitutes reality, identity, authenticity or other nebulous and spiritual concepts. His books after becoming a street freak and having religious revelations are his best.

it's a good book and has barely anything to do with the movie, which has a worse story by far and an aesthetic and atmosphere so good they're enough to compensate for the story and then some

Those are his worst books. I wish he never tried drugs, what a waste of a person. Utter fucking schizoid too if you watch his interviews, "the cops are watching me man!" yeah cause you are tweaking the fuck out.

Am I? I just couldn't take him rambling on about his personal life under the veneer of a sci-fi story anymore, and he's said as much in interviews.

Convince me to finish them, I'd like to think PKD isn't a terrible writer but the ending of Ubik and Valis gave me a bad taste that he can only really write short stories.

He's never wrote scifi. Scifi and the future is completely incidental to his stories. His work has always been about people's inner world not outer space. His prose and settings aren't particularly interesting. If you're not fascinated by a mind trying to reconcile religious revelation and witness its own collapse via fiction I don't know what to tell you. Pulp scifi is not what makes PKD interesting and I have no idea why anyone would read him otherwise.

I am not fascinated by a drug addict schizo tweaking out and it just being PKD's own story of his life as a fucking degenerate, yes.

I am just not easily entertained by drug addicts (other than that guy who flies drones at homeless people) I suppose. It's sort of super cringe, I am half tempted to finish the book just to be certain of my view and can then proudly deplore people who do find it fascinating.

Other than that mark on him, the rest of his stuff is cool.

Wait until you reach adulthood and confront the (comfortable) realties of addiction or casual drug use. It’s easy to be immune as a child to stresses and triggers of life. From raising a child to multiple miscarriages, every tiny setback wears you down slowly, like grains of sand against a sea-facing cliff. The reasons only get more numerous year into year. Some pretend their prescriptions are not “drugs” or their socially approved habits are likewise not “drugs” but your definition of sobriety and adherence to it goes out the window when personal crisis’ mount up. Addiction takes many forms, like your addiction for approval and the desire to label things out of your reach as degenerate. Suckers like you always end up hitting pain killers and booze while criticizing pot smokers. The gradients are where life takes place.
