How do I get into philosophy? Am I supposed to choose one or read all of them?

I hate the “start with muh Greeks” meme, but honestly, for this, it’s just correct. Start with Plato. Foundational, exciting, and pleasurable to read. It doesn’t super matter what Plato you start with. Get a copy of The Republic or a book that has like three or four dialogues collected in it. You could also start with Descartes’ “Meditations,” the book that kickstarted modern philosophy. It’s short, easy to understand, and still debated today.

Dont listen to swtg fags. All ancient philosophy is adequately explained by Kant. To really start in an interesting and modern fashion that won’t have you wrapped up in rhetorical cliches, Kant and Spinoza.

Generally speaking all philosophy before Descartes was a meme thanks to chr*stians appropriating neoplatonism to their nefarious abrahamic myths to stifle mankinds progress for 15 centuries.

Start with the Greeks. I'm not joking, it's literally how you start with serious philosophy. There could have been an alternative "start with the Indians" route if the stupid fucks had written stuff down apart from what was directly connected to their religions. The Charvakas, for example, were clearly onto something but they lost out to Buddhism and other systems and we only know they existed because they're (disparagingly) mentioned in Buddhist and Jain texts.

>da jesus book

what the fuck is this? Compare the book of john kjv

> In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

To the book of John in da jesus book

>1 Da time everyting had start, had one Guy. “Godʼs Talk,” dass who him. Dat Guy an God, dey stay togedda, an da Guy stay God fo real kine. 2 Dass da Guy, da time everyting had start, him an God stay togedda. 3 God wen make everyting, but da way he do um, he tell dis Guy fo do um. No mo notting dis Guy neva make. 4 He da Guy, if you like come alive fo real kine, you come by him, cuz dat kine life come from him. Wen peopo come alive lidat, jalike dey stay inside one place dat get plenny light. Den dey can see an undastan. 5 No matta stay dark, da dark no can pio da light. Everytime get light. Had one guy God wen send, name John. 7 God wen send John fo tell all da peopo wat he know bout Godʼs light, so dey can trus God cuz a him. Dass his kuleana. John, he not da light. He ony come fo tell da peopo dat da light stay fo real. 9 Dat time wen John stay teaching, jalike da light dass fo real was coming inside da world. Dass da light dat show everybody wass true. Dat time, da light dass fo real wen stay inside da world. Wen God wen make da world, he da Guy wen do um. But da peopo inside da world, dey neva know who him.

This is the funniest shit I've read in a while. No way this is real. I'm scared to believe this is real

Start with Plato, specifically The Symposium & The Republic. They’re both short east reads and basically every western philosopher for the next 2500 years writes some response to him. He’s by far not the best philosopher but he works great as an introduction. Besides that read whichever philosophers interest you it doesn’t matter too much whether you go in order or stick to a theme.

Are you actually just starting? If so then seriously, check out prof Michael Sugrue on YouTube. There's a bunch of recorded lectures from the early 90's and they are literally the best thing I've found on youtube. Intelligent, engaging to follow, not dumbed down but still done with an effort to make beginners understand.
Start with the ones on Plato or Stoicism, or the Kierkegaard one is really good.

if you decide to start with Plato read John M. Cooper's introduction to his edition of Plato's Complete Works for context regarding chronology, translations, footnotes, etc. I'm no scholar but it seems to be regarded as the 'definitive' Plato volume.
Symposium was my starting point, then the Five Dialogues
