So does this book suck or not? I've mostly sworn off doorstop 20th century showoff novels, but the backlash against IJ has reached such a point that I think it must actually be good. He wrote some banger short stories, it can't be all bad.

>>22743458
It's not bad but a good chunk of it does feel incessantly juvenile in that early 30s sort of way. Read it only to read The Pale King, which is the last true American classic.

How did this make me feel?

>> No.22744346

It's the only book I've ever read that really puts you into the mind of a schizoid addict. The way you're second guessing things narrative and all. I've talked about this with some friends that didn't quite like the book and they all experienced similar feelings but to them they just felt like it was a neat gimmick/trick but wasn't worth the time investment otherwise.

For me, that feeling alone made the book worthwhile. For you it might just be a gimmick. I don't know, it's a hard book to recommend even If I did mostly like it. If you like the writing style of his short stories that could also be a good reason to pick it up. You get a lot of that.

Read it and defy the author by becoming a pseud worshipping it somewhat ironically in a way to filter out the real pseuds from your life. "jaja I was only pretending to be retarded, jokes on them"

The title alone has always made me not want to read it. It's like he had Joker makeup on while writing it.
Its fans make me hate it.
Excerpts make me cringe.

>> No.22746079

At this point there are more people that have crafted an entire personality around hating this book than there are "litbros" that worship it. Maybe it was always like this.

Feels like there's some growing interest in Jest again because these autists won't stop reminding everyone of how much they don't like it and how terrible of a person you must be if you like it. This isn't the way I would've liked for things to turn out but I'm glad there's still some interest out there.

It's good book. It's been on /lit/s recommended reading for years with a bit of playful teasing about it only being good as a doorstopper. Over the years newfags flooded in, saw the memes and took them very seriously. Now here we are.

I don't know what "not that good" means. It's a good book that's worth reading. I don't care if sir binkle bottom's adventure is better, that doesn't make it any less of a good book.
