This guy's annoying. Doesn't feel like he's developed any of this thoughts in any kind of interesting way. He relies on the intentionality prescribed to him by his audience, who wants to view him as being more prescient than he actually is. At the same time he gets to have his cake and eat it by chastising people for taking stuff "too seriously" whenever he gets called out for saying something retarded or undercooked.

Sam Hyde doesn't grasp that Holden was a deliberately contradictory (and at times despicable) character because he was young and aimless, and was thus emblematic of that vital piece of youth where you're smart enough to grasp "something ought to be happening in my life!" but not yet mature nor seasoned enough to understand any of life's intricacies. To call Holden ignoble is a little callous, however, because his grumbling and kicking stones is all in the service of making the audience think about themselves and how they might be similar (or were once similar) to the character. I mean his name is fucking "Hold On, Caulfield" so the book isn't some manifesto nor similar take, it is the author crafting a personification of a very unique period in most peoples' lives. It is ultimately a good thing the Holden character (and this book) exists.

Sam in general seems to resent anyone who isn't on some kind of hyper-pragmatic soulless new-age grindset where everyone spills their blood at the altar of post-ironic cynicism. Living around boomers has given him some kind of brain damage, because he clearly believes worth as a person is determined by measures of success and numbers in a computer. I'd dismiss this as him merely playing a character who does those things (if this was the case I'd actually praise him; it's not dissimilar to Holden as I describe above) but he's been at it for too long and the benefits of such elaborate pretending would be lost upon his audience of teenage boys who, because they are in desperate need of a good role model, will simply take everything he says at face value.

He's not a very good comedian, producer, investor, salesman, commentator, life guru nor much of anything, so I guess trying to ruin the lives of a demographic already victimized by other facets of society (including larger facets of mass media) is the best he can do. At least it's in character, since Sam fucks 15 year old girls and punches them in the face.

It’s less of a blemish against him though. I think, if anything, it speaks to just how bad things have gotten in our culture that young men don’t have other better immediate figures to seek out. They have no dads, no uncles, no older cousins or brothers, no professional mentors, no coaches, nobody that they’re wanting to go to for advice so they develop a parasocial relationship with a terminally online comedian because they have a sense he “gets” them since they like his shtick.

He’s a good comedian I guess, but the situation is really fucked up.

Making money off of youtube was either a major cause or continuation of this since your entire value there is measured by viewership metrics. Yet making ADHD-inducing clickbait ironically in still clickbait, begging for money from aimless guys half his age ironically is still pathetic, talking about wanting to buy rolexes and luxury cars ironically, etc. Ironically shielding everything in irony as a defense mechanism is more a Gen Z problem but Hyde embodies it.

The message of the book is universally agreeable tbqh. "Life is mostly shit, you just have to find one thing that makes it worth wading through all the bullshit." Holden never stops hating the graffiti, he never stops hating the vain and phony nature of most people, or their greed. He never reconciles with his English professor or sees eye to eye. He just realizes how much he loves Phoebe and how having her makes enduring all the shit worthwhile. His arc is almost definitely a "depressive episode" which is why he's whiny and hates everything but the logic applies to healthy people too

I'm so tired of listening to this guy. He is so negative, he's basically Holden Caulfield if he didn't grow up. But ooo if he says that he hates Salinger's book so he can't be criticized for that.

He's such a fake, pretentious person. Always condescending to his audience and calling them losers. Without his fans he's a nobody yet he's always shouting them down like a douche.

Also people love to say that the book is bad. It's not a bad book, the main character is not some kind of role model. Normies love to say this because they hated reading it in school and they like to feel smart by exaggerating its badness. It's just dumb.
