I just read Araby and, damn, the dissapointment is painfully relatable. This line in particular felt written by myself.
>I could not call my wandering thoughts together. I had hardly any patience with the serious work of life which, now that it stood between me and my desire, seemed to me child's play, ugly monotonous child's play.
Oh to feel tween love again...
Is the rest of Dubliners as good as this?

If you relate to that story, it's over for you.

Of course it's over for me. I can finally post here legally and have never had any romantic experiences with anyone other than one-sided crushes. I feel like I probably could attract someone as I am decent looking, but my cynicism and disillusion with the majority of women will prevent me from doing so, not to mention my ideals on teenage love being quite unrealistic too. So yeah. It's over, so what?

I had an English professor who has us spend half the term dissecting Dubliners.
Pretty good stuff.
If it was any other author than Joyce I’d think the scrupulous and meticulous detailing would be a farce.
But I know better.

Yes but you can only relate to it once you have passed the respective age he's writing about.

I related to 'A painful case' the most.

But how would have he been able to write tales to relate if he were younger than those stories? How do you do that?

>> No.22720371

Of course it's not over. The story was obviously based on a younger Joyce, and he turned out more than okay. The disappointment of the story is a youthful, narcissistic and essentially petty disappointment, barely a problem in the scheme of one's life. The main problem of the story is only "vanity", both meanings of the word.
>>22719828
Case in point: you're only 18. You're not really disillusioned with women, you're just inexperienced, lonely and narcissistic. It's almost impossible for you to appreciate this advice right now because naturally you are currently attached to your own suffering, but just be patient.

I pity all the poor bastards out there that relate to 'A Little Cloud' the most.

I understand it is a petty and quite incidental, to the point it might be completely forgotten by someone else. I'm curious about why you say narcissistic though. I appreciate the uplifting comment though

>lived in poverty and squalor his whole life
>looked down upon by publishers and the general public
>family devastated by mental illness
>constant health issues until death
>fart fetishist
anon I agree with your assessment of the story but I'm not sure Joyce's life is an exemplar of turning out ok...

Clay is the worst story, and Two Gallants the second best after The dead.

I've always found it fascinating that the earlier work of Joyce has more in common with children's literature than the output of his peers.

"After The Race" is underrated, and it is the story in Dubliners that I personally relate to the most. I know exactly how it feels to have a little money, but hang out with people who have a lot of money, and spend more than I should trying to keep up with them, and feel disgusted afterwards. That story hit way too close to home for me.

it's a parody of dante's divine comedy that makes fun of the fact that redemption is no longer possible in our degenerate world- we only have this imitation of spiritual growth (i.e. walking from a bathroom to a church) without a god to make it holy

Sure but wouldn't recommend FW to a single person. You have to find that book yourself. Ulysses and Portrait on the other hand are table stakes for any serious aesthete
