Various /lit/ publications have come and gone: The Lit Quarterly, Pinecone, The April Reader, and Ideology, to name a few. There have been collaborative works, like Coronameron, The /lit/ Annotated Moby Dick, Legacy of Totalitarianism in a Tundra, and The Complete Works of God II. Some of these projects were one-offs, some were serialized. Some /lit/ projects, like Unreal Press, are still hanging on but are plagued by drama, and some, like &amp, seem to be rapidly in decline.

Also related are the solo writers of /lit/, composed of various namefags and shills who frequent the board: MNM-DR, John David Card, Zulu Alitspa, Jason Bryan, Frater Asemlen, Horia Belcea, Ogden Nesmer, Lewis Woolston, F. Gardner. There are also those who did not come from /lit/ but are /lit/-adjacent simply because they are discussed here so frequently: Mike Ma, R. C. Waldun, Bronze Age Pervert.

This thread is for the discussion of the history of /lit/ writing and the future of /lit/. Why have so many /lit/ projects failed and fallen apart, and what do you think is next for the scene? Does anonymity vs pseudonymity vs. the use of real names make a difference in the success or failure of these projects, and the way in which these projects are perceived? Of the works that /lit/ has produced, are there common characteristics and themes shared between them? Is there a definitively /lit/ style of writing? Has /lit/ produced anything truly great, and if not, do you believe that it will in the future?

It should state you own the copyright.

About royalties, what work did Ryan do for you to justify them? I know he was responsible for the cover and other graphical stuff, but did he actually do any copyediting? And he handled all of the formatting/typesetting? The copyright statement was notably bad, so everything beyond that is also suspect (though I'm guessing you at least did some editing passes yourself). At https://lampbylit.com/magazine/publish/ there's a brief description of what Ryan is offering, but it says he's doing it for free (which is what he'd said on /lit/ before), so I'm also wondering why you decided to split royalties. Was there some additional piece of work he offered?

There are also things like the marketing you've mentioned, which aren't included in this, but seem like a pretty important component to your agreement. Those are sort of soft services, so maybe they're harder to get in writing, but the fact that none of Ryan's work is required in the contract seems like a bad approach (though I'll give the benefit of the doubt and guess he did most or all of it before signing anyway).

There's also the future Lamp royalties thing that's been mentioned, which isn't in here. Did you formalise that?

This is kind of separate from the actual contract, instead going off what you said about Ryan sending you the sales reports: he's the one getting the money and then paying you? Seems standard for a publisher, but be careful if only because Ryan has a lot of red flags when it comes to money and availability. The &amp website was known to go down frequently last year, and what was said about him asking to loan money seems substantive; this is someone who at the beginning of the year was homeless, and who now seems to be actively on drugs again. Are you getting the sales reports as forwarded emails, or by some other means? Make sure it's not something easily faked.

And my last thing for now is still about money. Regardless of your personal feelings about Ryan, he has problems with drug addiction (going back to the "message in a bottle" thread, way before what was said by Atlas). No matter how nice someone may be, when dealing with addiction they will stoop low to satisfy their habit once they run out of options. But the likelihood of the latter being possible is slim; when an addict gets more money, it goes back into drugs. And consider what you will actually do, legally, if things go south. Can you afford a lawyer? Can you afford the time and money it takes to settle a civil case with someone in another country who may not even have a fixed address? I'll reiterate that I'm glad to finally see the contract, so thanks for posting it. I'd like to hear what's going on with the Lamp royalties from future projects, and about how the sales receipts are being shown to you. Okay, I realised something else after going over your picture of the contract again.

This outs me as Ari (might as well put the trip on now), if that wasn't already obvious, but the section of your contract that you sent me before (which you said you already signed) was different. See pic related. There's the second item of the "Author's Warranties", which is evidently different from what you sent me before (no mention of images previously, and clearly no big bolded line). Did you actually sign this agreement before you gave your work to Ryan? Did you change it at some point?

Sorry to throw this in at the end, but it casts serious doubt on the idea that you actually signed an agreement with Ryan.

This is absurd. A standard publishing contract with a mainstream publisher gives the author 7-12.5% royalties per copy sold based on the suggested retail price of the book. KDP gives the author 60% of the retail price as royalties, minus printing costs. I calculated your printing costs, and because the book is printed in colour, it costs about $6.8 USD to print each copy. So with a retail price of $16.99 you’re making about $3.39 on each copy, which is about 20% royalties, and you’re giving half of that to Ryan? You’re only getting 10% of the proceeds per copy, which is roughly the same amount that an actual publisher would give you.

And fundamentally, a mainstream publisher is justified in taking their cut, because they handle the costs of designing, formatting, editing, printing, binding, advertising, marketing, and distribution, plus publishers have the ability to work with retail outlets and have your book promoted and sold in stores. The whole point of self-publishing is that, although your book has less prestige and a limited reach, you are directly in control of your royalties. What has Ryan done to deserve 50% of your profits? Make a shitty amateur-looking cover that probably took him about 15 minutes in Canva? He hasn’t eaten any costs here, except for the costs of whatever time he spent formatting and promoting this thing, and considering the number of errors within the cover and front matter alone, he didn’t put much effort into it. This whole scheme is a fucking joke, and you’re a natural born mark. You’re willingly letting him take advantage of you.

You claimed that the contract you signed with Ryan was much more favourable than anything you could’ve signed with a mainstream publisher. How? At least a mainstream publisher would be giving you a substantial amount of prestige, promotion, and reach in exchange for their cut of the profits. This payment schedule isn’t mentioned anywhere in the contract that you’ve shown, and it’s the kind of thing that absolutely needs to be put in writing. For your own protection that scenario should be clearly outlined in the contract, something like:

The point of a contract is to outline someone's duties to you, and what you posted doesn't obligate any of the marketing you're talking about. If Ryan stops you can't say anything about it. And the other anon was keen to point out that it doesn't even state when or how you should be payed beyond "50% sometime". With what you posted, I'd interpret it as being permissible for him to hold onto your money until Nov 30th, 2024.

Right now you've effectively given a drug addict 13 months to do as he pleases with your proceeds from your book. Maybe I'm wrong, but I imagine the first year for your book is going to be its most popular time, so those 13 months are key for the money you'll actually make. What's your recourse at the end if this goes south? When it comes to your Right to Rescind, the fact that you both need to agree to change or cancel the contract means that it won't necessarily help you if you have a problem with Hartley. If he does something you don't like, but refuses to agree to terminate, then you're stuck with it. I don't see how that 13-month stipulation somehow implies monthly payments or would substantiate that obligation. The fact that you have a contract and apparently a bunch of agree-to terms outside of it also seems like a problem. Yes, you can have contractual agreements without a formal and signed document, but dealing with disputes in that case seems evidently more difficult. Not only that, but it brings up the question of why you wouldn't include those terms if you're signing a contract anyway; the contract makes the other terms seem less official and I wouldn't be surprised by someone using a formal contract as a way to claim their other supposed obligations weren't actually agreed upon. Maybe you have records of emails and such that show what's been agreed to outside of this, but what if he makes the claim that you had a phone call in which you outlined different terms? Without it all formally enshrined you have a much tougher time substantiating your case.

You keep acting like you're impartial about Ryan when it's clear you're not. With your background, you should understand that someone dealing with homelessness and addiction is not someone you should be entrusting your work and money to. Last February, when the selection of pieces was effectively finalised but I had yet to get very far on compiling everything, I asked him if he wanted to work on it together. He was enthusiastic but never came around to actually offering any help. Even for simple requests like for clean copies of the original entries and for his suggestions on pieces to include, he never came through. The most he did was a page promoting it in &amp ("the greatest hits" plastered over a picture re-used from an old issue), along with the incidental benefit of giving me access to the &amp email.

Having access to the email allowed me to get original copies of the pieces, but was a month and a half after I asked, after I'd already struggled through extracting most of them from the PDFs. In the mean time he'd threatened publicly to take the project for himself, after ignoring my emails. I'm also certain his intention wasn't to help me with the best-of by giving me access to his account, but was part of some convoluted and unexplained plan to have me take over &amp (something I'd never asked for or been asked about). All of that was put me off from wanting to work with him in any sense, though it's not the full extent of stupid shit he's pulled.

I haven't said anything about the quality of Shards in itself, and my criticisms have never been related to that, so stop thinking that I'm out to shit on your book.

What do you even mean by this? Publishing a book is a process that, whether done independently or traditionally, requires substantial time and effort to do well. Woolston’s “publisher” is barely a step up from the Lamp Scamdard KDP operation. I read the info on their site (Truth Serum Press), and he’s getting a raw deal. The publishing operation is run by one guy out of his spare room, they exclusively use Print-On-Demand (Lulu and Amazon), and their website is sketchy and unprofessional as fuck. They have a whole section about contracts: Woolston gets zero advance on his book, and 20% royalties on net profits, not on standard retail price (increases by 10% for each subsequent book he releases with them), so 20% of whatever the publisher makes from Lulu. This means that he might end up being able to shill his book to a couple of local bookstores who will buy a few copies because it relates to rural Australian culture, but he has essentially no chance of ever getting his book into larger booksellers. His publisher has also pivoted to exclusively publishing anthologies (for which they don’t pay contributors anything, or even offer them a free copy), so it’s not like Woolston can even publish another book with them to take advantage of the increased royalty percentage on subsequent releases. Woolston goes around bragging about being traditionally published, but don’t be fooled: he makes fuck-all money from his books and has to work full time, plus a second job at KFC to make ends meet. There’s a reason he shills his shit 24/7. A contract like that seems like such an obviously shitty arrangement that he’d probably be better off self-publishing. While Ari is correct to be skeptical of this contract, the whole thing is a moot point. If Hartley or just about anyone wanted to steal your art, they could and you wouldn't do shit about it. Copyright is only as strong as the force you're willing to put into defending it. The legal system doesn't immediately buckle and sway under something so insignificant as an objective truth signed by both parties. It will be a long fought battle down a winding path that the vast majority of you are too stupid and poor to navigate.
Instead, the real issue we have here is another example of the faggot play-pretend that so many of our authors keep losing themselves in. Robert didn't sign on with Hartley due some brotherly camaraderie or a mutually beneficial relation that would have the both of them find a living wage from their passions. He did it because he didn't want the embarrassing title of "self published author" and decided that an obvious short cut was the solution. These play-pretend creators are all around us.

And pic related is an email I received recently, during one of Ryan's freak-outs, claiming to be the author of one of the books that was scrubbed from the Lamp Standard page after the Atlas stuff came out. Previously the blurb was still up if you went to the right URL, but even that's removed now.

The email that sent me this one is really bizarre. Wasn't the usual username style thing, but akin to something like "PayHereUSD@etc.com". Not only that, but the name on the account sure as shit wasn't "Casca". Of course, this could be someone with an odd email, but if my memory serves the weird email was one that I saw while I had access to the &amp account, having been some old alt Ryan used for I dunno what. So this was Ryan in a panic trying to save face or maybe trying to bait me into something.

I never got a response, of course. If the actual author is out there, send me an email. On the slim chance this was the real author, I'd take something like a forward of an old, nondescript email exchange with Ryan as proof.

I'd told him there was some really serious stuff going on, enough for me to go to the police, and that it was still persistent. I told him I was worried it'd start happening through &amp again. He acted nice and conciliatory, but was also pretty weird at that point.

Later on Atlas sent him an email to try and contact me, which he replied to before I got out my own asking him to ignore it; he said he would from then on, but because I had access to his email I saw that he had forwarded his email chain with Atlas to one of his private accounts. I didn't say anything about it because by then it had become pretty clear Ryan was screwed up, plus it wasn't something I felt safe to intervene in.

There's lots of in-between, but someone told me that he'd more or less taken her on as his protégé, which (along with other things), lead me to suspect that something fucked up was going on in the background. Other people seemed to clue in as well (given the grooming accusations that came up later, which I wasn't the one to start). Not only that, but he was encouraging her towards things that could have had legal repercussions or wound up that way (meaning the shit involving me), which is fucked up in itself.

The problems with Atlas stopped in July, and it's stayed that way since then. But having a crazy egomaniac influencing the unstable person that had been obsessed with me was unfun, and it's clear that recently he's been trying to manipulate and terrify her back into a state like that again. Beyond Ryan's personal love for dogging vulnerable women, I've had the thought for a long time that he also saw it as a way to scare me into putting up with him. But that last part might just be paranoia.

Ari and Atlas met a couple years ago and talked over the phone for a few weeks. Ari wasn't interested and nothing happened. The two stopped talking and never met in person.

A year later he gets a text in the summer about her being in love with him and how she thinks he's been sending her anonymous signals. He sees her near his work the next day and freaks out. He tells her to fuck off by text.

Atlas then showed up in the threads when Ari started the best of &amp, but was using a pseudonym (Atlas) acting like they were strangers. A couple months in he found out Atlas was the girl, so he got spooked and shelved everything.

Here's where the Discord faggotry kicks in.

Ari joins the Unreal server at some point after getting spooked. Atlas is there secretly and starts pretending to be some Brazilian guy to bait Ari into bringing up the fact that she stalked him through the best of &amp. She went psycho on /lit/ the next day and posted that threat to kill herself >>22717361, which he thought was meant to bait him into meeting up with her. He calls the cops.

After that she used another account to pretend she was in the server and had read everything but didn't take part, which got the heat off the fake account. She continued pretending to be the Brazilian to get Ari to talk about the stalking, encouraging him to talk to her (Atlas) directly. She goaded him into emailing her saying it'd all stop if she got things off her chest >>22717307 before going full schizo again saying she's falling apart because he's not replying. He calls the cops and they warn her that it's harassment. She started all over again with another account before getting found out and causing Ari to (finally) jump ship, but not before she dropped personal details about him in the chat.

Some of Unreal thought Ari had staged it all, and somebody made threats pretending to be both Ari and Atlas. Atlas had talked to a lot of them extensively as the Brazilian, so a few were spooked already. Cue the doxxfagging. This kicked Atlas into high gear and she spent months ranting in /wwoym/ and on /adv/ talking to strangers she thought were Ari, and made a threat about showing up at his new work, which she had found before he got himself removed from their website. Apparently she was calling and texting Ari non-stop.

At some point Atlas got involved with Hartley. Earlier in this thread Ari said Atlas had stopped harassing him. Now here we are.

The fact that the fake Ari is somehow more reasonable than Atlas is wild.
