BAKKER IS KING
>Arrows fletched in faraway Galeoth pocked the turf about him, but he didn’t move. More and more shafts feathered the ground as Agmundrmen began finding the drift and distance. Facing the Inrithi, the remote Sapatishah pulled a knife from his crimson girdle—and began paring his nails. Now the Fanim began to laugh and roar as well, beating their round shields with sun-flashing scimitars. The very earth seemed to shiver, so ferocious was the din. Two races, two faiths, willing hate and murder across the littered Battleplain. Then Skauras raised a hand, and the drums resumed their implacable throbbing. The Fanim began advancing along the entirety of their line. The Men of the Tusk fell silent, butted their pikes and squared their shields with those of their neighbours. It was beginning again. Trailing clouds of dust, the Kianene ponderously gathered speed. As though counting drumbeats, the forward ranks lowered their lances in unison, urged their horses to gallop. With a piercing cry, they threw themselves at the Inrithi, while mounted archers swept to either side, showering the Northmen with arrows. They came crashing in successive waves, deeper and more numerous than in the morning. Entire companies were sacrificed for mere lengths of earth. Here and there, against the Üsgalders of Galeoth, against the battered Cuärwishmen, the Nangaels and Warnutes of Ce Tydonn, the Kianene gained the crest of the ravine, pressed the iron men back. Pikes snapped, gouged faces, hooked harnesses. Curved scimitars cracked helms, snapped collarbones through iron mail. Maddened horses crashed through rank and shield. And just when the heathen’s numbers and momentum seemed to fail, more waves resolved from the dust, leaping through the ravine, pounding over the dead, lancing into the staggered footmen. There was no time for tactics, no time for prayer, only the desperate scramble to kill and live. At several points, the common line wavered, broke … Then, as though stepping out of the blinding sun, the Cishaurim revealed themselves.

Got a bit over halfway through, but I had to drop it. Shit's way too long and repetitive. Real unfortunate, because there were some really amazing parts in it, and Renfield remains my favorite character. In fact, he's the only reason I feel any draw towards finishing it. Seriously could've been about half as long and been a real strong book. Even if unbeknownst to me the book magically gets better in the second half, it wouldn't matter because I've already been so exhausted by the first half.

It's my pleasure. I started reading this guy and became shocked that /lit/ is sleeping on him because he's fucking good. He's apparently written some harder sci-fi stuff but I've only read Oprichnik and a few of his short stories.
Another thing he does which I've been wanting more of in SFF is reject the morally grey meme and write protagonists who are just straight up vile people. The MC of Oprichnik is basically future slav Patrick Bateman.

A Portrait in Shadow - Nicole Jarvis (2023)

A Portrait in Shadow is a historical fantasy novel that loosely follows the life of Artemisia Gentileschi, a renowned 17th century painter, who accomplished several firsts as a female painter. The first half is Artemisia at nineteen years old trying to establish herself in Florence. She paints, seeks out patrons, attempts to be accepted by the academy/guild of magical artists, and tries to earn enough to avoid literally being a starving artist. The latter half has a focus on romance, introspection, and conflict. This novel is about her daily life and the struggles she goes through. It's almost entirely character driven. As this is a fantasy novel, the few years of her life that are depicted are considerably different from what is thought to be known. These differences are explained to be because in this version of Earth, magic and mythical beasts exist.

Magic is either healing or necrotic. The passionate emotions that an artist imbues their art with determines its function. A work of art can either be bound to a single person or affect everyone in an area. The two most common healing properties are alleviating chronic ailments and life extension. As a result the wealthy and Vatican priests commonly live to be well over a hundred years old. Artists die young though because they must give away part of their soul for each magically imbued work of art they create. The more powerful the magic is, the more of their soul it costs. At the opposite end is necrotic magic, the most powerful of which caused the Black Plague. The Grave Age then followed where for centuries all artists were hunted down and killed out of fear that they would bring down more plagues upon the world. Even now, centuries after the Grave Age, any artist who is even accused of dabbling in the dark arts can lose their entire reputation and be tortured to death. The two most important beasts are the Griffon and the Blood Drake, which symbolize Good and Evil, and were nearly hunted to extinction in Europe during the Grave Age.

I read this because I'm reading a manga, Arte, that's inspired by the life of the same historical person. It's even further from her life, though that's because isn't meant to be her. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. A lot of that is because I simply like how it's written. The romance of the latter half is a bit too saccharine and all the would-be sex scenes are fade to black, though I felt it did well enough. I'm conflicted about the purpose of changing so much and saying it's a different version of her rather than being an inspired character, but in this case I'll accept it. I had concerns about how meaningful the beasts and magic would be, but they're both organically integrated into the story in a pleasing way and matter a lot. There's also a considerable amount of sociological exploration concerning magic that I appreciated alongside the social commentary.

Thor gave his battle cry. It gave me courage. Daredevil kept working shots. Tagging the cyclops as fast as he could. As fast as they came in. I heard Autumn heave as something knocked her down. But she was up a second later, blood running down her face. Sword in both hands. Breathing heavily.
This is how it ends…
That’s what I was thinking when Vandahar shouted above the din of the last battle.
“Du skal stoppe, de døde krefter!”
Thou shall halt, forces of the dead.
“This far and no farther!” The wizard’s voice echoed over the battle as a sudden fireworks storm of flaming stars and shooting comets raced over our heads like an airstrike called in danger close. Waves of the zombie cyclops were flung in every direction as the ground rippled and shook. Some of our foes had burning holes torn straight through their lithe bodies. Burning rocks searing their ruined and rotting armor.
And then the dwarves came in, hacking with their savage battle axes as they gave their war cries, striking down the dead and pulling us out of there.

>But the Cis-Whorim, in telling truth, were scarcely prepared to match blades with the dreaded paladins of Binglethorpe. Though they sprung forth from their point of ambush as swiftly as a striking snake, the paladins of Binglethorpe, in turn, did spring forth even spriniger than they, as if they were at once, both in strength and in spirit, like mongooses. Into the steaming mire of blood and tattered banners fell the (aforementioned faction), their helmed heads dropping first from whence they were lobbed and sundered free of their shoulders. Mth'brlithioroth, the famed captain of the Pteranodon Cavalry, looked down upon Lord Binglethorpe's devastating charge into the beating, blood-seeping heart of the enemy and keckled with equal measures of amusement, admiration, and arousal.
>"Valiant as ev'before, my brother," he whispered loud enough so the other Pteranodon Riders who were flying in formation spaced precisely fifty fifth-king strides apart could lend their ears to his musings.
>"Gorge now, my pretty," he then bellowed softly, extending upon his red myth'thuril lance a sack of Fiend Beans to the drooling maw of his mount, and bade his riders do the same.
>"Not a cloud in the sky, and yet...there shall be rain "

>Her turquoise silk bedgown billowed around her as she paced. Three times she had braided and unbraided her long firegold hair, dissatisfied by every effort. With each sharp movement of her fingers, her emerald flashed in the sunlight. A selection of gowns was heaped on her lounge chair, but she had not even begun trying them on, occupied for the moment with doing something about her hair. Her muttered curses and the occasional hiss of sheer annoyance amused her husband greatly.

It's a short story collection and what's unique about this series is the world is a fantasy world that naturally evolved to 40s/50s level technology. So all the fantasy stuff is out in the open and everyone knows about it unlike the typical urban fantasy take. And the protag has no powers at all; he's just a cop who works for the mayor's office who has to deal with all the weird magical shit when it gets out of hand.

BAKKER IS KING
>Kellhus acknowledged a corporeal dissonance, a discord between the assumed form and the yearning of the soul. The reed mats beneath him seemed to echo the tumult within, as the Aspect-Emperor confronted the shadowed realms of bodily dysmorphia. The prince of intellect, the master of stratagems, grappled with a revelation that transcended the political intrigues and divine machinations that had long defined his existence. In the quiet of his secluded sanctuary, Kellhus stood at the crossroads of transformation, where the desire to become, in essence, a woman, whispered through the corridors of self-discovery.

Corporal Monroe was an assaulter from Third Platoon. Sergeant Chris’s kingdom and subjects. He was now, after a long and painful fever that verged on some kind of worst flu ever, an eight-foot-tall minotaur complete with razor-sharp bull horns and a hairy hide. His lower half was still humanoid—though unhumanly hairy—but his upper half was now a perfect inverted triangle of bulging muscles and then his bull’s face. He made it to the Ranger patrol base via Last of Autumn’s horse, who knew the way and knew how to move fast. The Ranger who had become a beast of a minotaur just held on for dear life and got off when the horse needed a rest. When it was time to ride again the horse would lower its head and Corporal Monroe would climb aboard and off they’d go. The Forge had cranked out a special plate carrier for him and even an actual old-school M60E3 machine gun Special Forces had developed for CQB. Collapsible stock, foregrip, ultra-lightweight barrel, and a high-powered red targeting laser because Corporal Monroe’s new anatomy made it harder for him to achieve gunsight with the iron sights. The targeting laser told him where the rounds he was spraying would land. Also, the trigger had needed modification to fit his now massive fingers.

Based schlock.

>Rohan typically immersed himself in work even during meals, but on this particular morning, he chose to set aside his duties, captivated by the enchanting sight of his wife succumbing to nerves.

>Her turquoise silk gown gracefully swirled as she paced, the vibrant hue accentuating the elegance of her movements. Braiding and unbraiding her cascading firegold hair, she seemed dissatisfied with each attempt. In the sunlight, her emerald flashed with every swift movement of her fingers. Despite a heap of gowns on her lounge chair, she focused on her hair, emitting muttered curses and occasional hisses of sheer annoyance, much to her husband's delight.

>Finally, he remarked, "You've never gone to such lengths for me."
>Sioned scowled, retorting, "Sons are more observant than husbands—especially after being gone for three years!"

>Her turquoise silk gown danced with grace as she paced, the vibrant hue accentuating the elegance of each movement. Braiding and unbraiding her flowing firegold hair, she displayed dissatisfaction with each attempt. In the sunlight, her emerald gleamed with each deft motion of her fingers. Despite a cascade of gowns on her lounge chair, she remained fixated on her hair, releasing muted curses and occasional hisses of sheer annoyance, much to her husband's amusement.

>At last, he commented, "Never have you gone to such lengths for me."
>Sioned scowled, countering, "Sons are more observant than husbands—especially after an absence of three years!"
>"May a mere husband proffer a suggestion? Why not embrace your innate allure? Pol anticipates his mother, not the High Princess adorned in silks and jewels."

Just finished book 5 of wheel of time. The Fires of Heaven. It's the one where Rand leaves the waste. And Nynaeve and Elayne hunt Moghedien.

I don't have much to say about this book, other than I like it. I've already talked about it on /sffg/ before.(Mostly about Nynaeve) But I will say that Lan is a bad role model. It was Lan that implanted the idea in Rand's head that he should do whatever he must because he's a man and has duty or whatever. It sends Rand down a path where he feels like he needs to become harder and harder.
Then it's Lan who implants the idea in Rand's head that he can't love another woman, because he has darkness in him. Which sends Rand down his spiraling emo trip. Holy toxic masculinity, Batman. Lan is good with a sword. But he's perhaps a little TOO hard.

Also, all the dress changing descriptions don't get easier on reread. I get RJ needed a way to convey how the world of dreams works, but he really didn't need to interrupt every interaction with another dress changing description, and girls getting flustered over accidentally wearing revealing clothes. It's cute the first couple times. But he does it like 10 times.

The world of dreams is a reflection of the real world. All the buildings men build are there. The trees, the water. Etc. Except it's mostly unoccupied. conscious being tend not to exist there. Save for certain wild animals that inexplicably have an affinity for the dream. Like some birds and fish. For some reason domesticated animals lose their affinity as well. The dream is lit by a light that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere. With no real sense of time of day.

When a person is inside of the dream, they can interact with things to an extent. Like you might shift a box in a dream. And it will remain in its place for a short time, before returning back to where it should be in the real world. With will and intent, you can more firmly keep that box in its place. Fix it to where you think it should be. The greater practice you have at that, the more you can alter in the dream.

Your mind has that kind of effect in the dream. Where your thoughts and perceptions tend to manifest themselves. It can happen purposely, where you imagine a cup of water to drink and you drink it. Or, it can happen accidentally, where stray thoughts and feelings alter something without your knowing. That's how you end up with women suddenly changing clothes. For example, when the princess character wants to exert more authority in the conversation she's having, her dress will suddenly change to something more elaborate and regal with with her house symbol on it. Or when a character gets scared, suddenly she's wearing armor. Or when she thinks of her love interest, suddenly she's wearing a low neckline dress that's slightly sheer. And then becomes embarrassed about it.

Time and space work differently too. You can think yourself into other locations in a blink. Or a single step could move you forward a mile. The dream is far more dangerous than the waking world, because there, everyone can perform "magic", by manipulating the dream with their thoughts.

>uh, I forgot that Lan put the idea Rand needs to be hardened in his head
It happens in one of the earlier books. When he tells Rand "duty is heavier than a mountain". That becomes Rand's mantra. He always tells himself that when he's about to do something difficult. Also, all that stuff about dying on your feet and being a man. It sounded nice in the moment. But as Rand becomes harder and harder, Lan never cautions him. Never suggest he pulls back. Never gives him anything else to round him out. Lan always approved. There are moments when Lan repeats his Mantra, or says "I do what I must", and Lan gives him a little nod. Except for that one time Moiraine was reduced to pleading to Rand. Lan didn't like that.

Also, if you die in the dream you die in real life. Injuries sustained in the dream are sustained in real life. To an extent. It depends how much you're inside of the dream. Only a part of a person enters the dream. A fragment. So if a fragment of you gets injured, then it's not so bad when you wake. But even a fragment can die.

Most people can't enter the world of dreams willingly. Everyone can find themselves in the world by accident in their sleep. But nobody realizes they're in the world, because to them it's just a dream. The slip into the world for no more than a few seconds, and then leave again. Never the wiser as to what happened.

Entering the dream willingly is mostly a lost art from the age of legends. But a sparse few people are born with the ability. It comes to them naturally. However, they might not even know they can do it themselves unless they're trained. And even if they could do it themselves, they might do something stupid in the dream and get themselves killed. Nightmares can be conjured in the dream, and before you realize what's happened, you're caught up in some horrific event of torture or death.

Special rings have been made to allow others to enter the dream as well. These are especially rare. Only like a handful of them exist.

Some other details I noticed this read through:
Asmodean's white frills were always perfectly clean. This might have been nothing. Just a random detail RJ like the point out. But it could have implied that he was channeling when Rand wasn't around to see him. Oh sure, maybe Gai'shain were washing his clothes every day. But I doubt that.

I also forgot who officially killed Asmodean. So I'm trying to piece the evidence together again. I'm not really sure who to suspect anymore. But thinking about their motivation for killing him, it seemed like it would be someone displeased by the fact that he was helping Rand. Maybe they thought Asmodean was still faithful to the great lord for a time, but in the latter part of the book, you can tell Asmodean was genuinely attempting to gain Rand's trust. He stopped holding back knowledge, and he volunteered to go against Rahvin. And he had the perfect opportunity to kill Rand when he was exhausted after the Shaido battle. But rather than kill Rand, he assist in healing him. He was completely compromised. And someone had to be close enough to Rand to know this. I doubt Rahvin was keeping tabs on Rand. However, Sammael had spies inside of Rand's camp. Proven by Matt's Shaido girlfriend having the golden bee insignia on her dagger. The golden bees attacked Rand's caravan before, shouting allegiance to Sammael. However, Asmodeon notes that the attack was out of character for Sammael. That another foresaken could have created the attack to bait Rand into confronting Sammael. This also makes sense, when you consider that Melindhra only attempts to kill Mat when she learns that he and Rand are going on a mission to Caemlyn. If she was instructed by Rahvin, then her oath would be to prevent them from invading Caemlyn. Instead, diverting them to Sammael. But if that were the case, then after Rahvin dies, there are no spies to report back to Sammael of Asmodeon's defection. Of course, Sammael might have thought it was prudent to kill Asmodeon regardless, after hearing that Rand killed Rahvin. Because he would assume that Asmodeon taught him too much, and he needed to put a stop to it.

Taim. Asmodean recognizes him because originally Taim was Demandred. However, Jordan retconned Taim's true identity when people figured it out because he was kind of a cunt like that, same with Olver being Gaidal Kane (I maintain that he is, no matter what Jordan said post-facto).

>> No.22703432

> same with Olver being Gaidal Kane
Does enough time pass for that to make sense? Gaidal Kane was spun out somewhere between the events of Book 4 and 5. We know this, because Birgitte mentions she hasn't seen him in some time near the beginning of book 5. He was by her side in book 4. Olver is introduced in book 6 at nine years old. I know time is a little funky in Tel'aran'rhiod. But I don't believe it's so disjointed that the soul of Gaidal can exist in the dream at the same time it exist in the waking world. In fact, I just talked myself into believing that you're wrong about that.

I'm not even sure what to think of idea that Mazrim Taim is(or was) Demandred. But I just started book 6, and it opens with Demandred meeting the great lord to receive instructions. My first thought was "what has this guy been doing? He's apparently been awake for a while. But doing what?" It would make a kind of sense if he was masquerading as a false dragon. But then again how does that advantage the dark one? Shouldn't Mazrim be looking for the real dragon reborn? Not futzing around playing at dragon? Also, this idea goes against the whole pattern weaving stuff. It was supposed(I forget by which character), that the pattern was spinning out more false dragons, because if Rand wasn't going to proclaim himself, then someone will. And then finally, when Rand proclaimed himself, both of the false dragons, from remote locations, saw Rand fighting over Falme, and had very peculiar accidents that appeared like Ta'veren work. One of them died to the mob, the other survived. But it makes you think that the wheel was doing away with the false, in order to elevate the true. And it kind of diminishes that moment, if actually one of the false dragons was Mazrim this whole time.

The Mazrim/Demandred conspiracy isn't completely outlandish. But I'm going to say it's unlikely.

If you notice, Taim says some things such as Calling the Aiel "So-called Aiel" and mentions how much they've changed, and absolutely SEETHES when Rand declared him the second Asha'man, which is all very in-character for Demandred but doesn't make a lot of sense if he's just some schmuck. That being said, it WAS retconned quite heavily, so that's not how it is in the story, it's just how it was originally intended before Jordan got butthurt that people figured out the twist. Taim is Taim in the book, not Demandred.
As for Olver, he's a short, ugly ladies man who Birgitte absolutely FAWNS over, he's definitely Gaidal. Time wimey nonsense from a non-linear dream realm.

>Time wimey nonsense from a non-linear dream realm.
No, I just don't buy it. Time is different in the dream, sure. But the way the timeline of events are, the soul would have existed both inside and outside of the dream at the same time. And that can't be. It doesn't make sense mechanically. Olver being 9 years old, means that he was alive even before the events of the Eye of the World. We're just dealing with two characters who parallel each other.

you have events all mushed up, my friend.
Book 4, The Shadow Rising: Nyneave makes contact with Birgitte, and they begin talking. Later, in the same book, Gaidal is beside Birgitte, and warns against interacting with Nynaeve, because it goes against the prescripts. He's in the dream.

Book 5, The Fires of Heaven: Nynaeve meets with Birgitte again, and she inquires about Gaidal. Here, Birgitte says he hasn't been around for some time, and supposes he's been spun out. "Some time, would be the time between book 4 and 5. In the dream, the perception of time is skewed. Typically, characters claim to spend more time in the dream than they do in the waking world. So from Birgitte's perpective, it was probably an even longer stretch of time than Nynaeve perceived. Or maybe it was shorter. I don't know for sure about the exact time mechanics in the world. But what I am sure of, is that we have an established boundaries of time. Where Gaidal was there, then not there. Gaidal was in the dream after Olver's birth. And Gaidel spun out after Olver's birth.

Book 6, Lord of Chaos: Mat meets Olver.

Also, Olver didn't come from nowhere. He had parents. When Birgitte explains about Gaidal being spun out, she says "If Birgitte was right, then somewhere in the world a boychild had been born, a mewling babe with no knowledge of who he was". A mewling babe. So the wheel isn't going to do any fast forwarding of his age.

When “science fiction” and “fantasy” emerged as distinct genres during the pulp era independent publishers quickly emerged as well to produce inexpensive hardcover editions of novels and collections in modest editions of anywhere from 500 to 2000 copies. By the 1970s, Arkham House, Donald M. Grant, Publisher Inc., and Mirage Press dominated the SF&F small press field: Underwood/Miller upset the order of things when they appeared at the World Science Fiction in 1976 and released the first hardcover edition of Jack Vance’s “The Dying Earth” illustrated by George Barr. The other three publishers had been actively pursuing Vance, often described as one of the greatest science fiction writers of the 20th Century, for many years to secure rights to the collection without success; they grumbled and couldn’t understand how “those new guys” were able to persuade the author when they couldn’t.

The answer was simple: Jack Vance liked Tim Underwood.

They both shared a “Bay Area Bohemian” outlook and became friends; subsequently, Underwood/Miller turned into Vance’s primary hardcover publisher, printing both classic and new works. Other writers liked Tim, too, were impressed by the high-quality of U/M’s books, and began approaching him with projects. As Chuck handled fulfillment and promotion, Tim signed deals with Philip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Roger Zelazny, Robert Silverberg, Stephen King, Peter Straub, and many others. But beyond the quality of their books’ contents they also raised the bar for their competitors by featuring acid-free paper, various binding materials (including leather, marbled endpapers, and hand-made wraps), a variety of title and typographic solutions, special signature/limitation pages, additional pages of content exclusive to the limited edition, slipcases and clamshell boxes: everything we’ve come to expect from a genre (and probably non-genre) deluxe edition today all largely originated with Tim Underwood’s vision and imagination.

>"The Malazan Book of the Fallen" series by Steven Erikson:
This epic fantasy series is known for its complex world, detailed history, and a vast cast of characters. It doesn't hold the reader's hand and drops them into an already ongoing plot, much like "Dark Souls" does with its gameplay and story.

>"The Book of the New Sun" series by Gene Wolfe:
Wolfe's work is noted for its dense narrative and the puzzle-like structure of its story. The series is replete with unreliable narration, a rich and enigmatic world, and a heavy emphasis on deciphering its true meaning.

>"The Black Company" series by Glen Cook:
This series follows a mercenary group in a gritty, dark fantasy world. The narrative is often bleak and morally ambiguous, which is reminiscent of the atmosphere in "Dark Souls."

>"Berserk" by Kentaro Miura:
While "Berserk" is a manga series rather than a collection of novels, it shares a dark fantasy setting and themes of struggle against overwhelming darkness. Its influence on the "Dark Souls" series has been acknowledged by the creators.

>"Gormenghast" series by Mervyn Peake:
The series is known for its detailed characterization and the elaborate, claustrophobic world of Gormenghast Castle, with a gothic atmosphere that can feel akin to the eerie environments of "Dark Souls."

>"Elric of Melniboné" series by Michael Moorcock:
Elric, the titular character, is an anti-hero wielding a soul-eating sword, set in a decaying, ancient empire. The mood and moral complexity of Elric's world have parallels to the dark and decaying universe of "Dark Souls."

>"The Dying Earth" series by Jack Vance:
Vance's series takes place in a far future where the sun is dying, and magic and technology are indistinguishable. It has inspired numerous games and stories with its dark sense of humor and richly imagined scenarios.

>"The Second Apocalypse" series by R. Scott Bakker:
This series combines philosophy with a dark, epic narrative, including a detailed world and a history that readers must uncover gradually.

The typos in the eBook version of (so far) the first two malazan books is honestly fucking ridiculous, so frequently you see letters getting misinterpreted as another (example: Toc being written as Toe, or the last name Orr being written as On etc etc) The books are excellent so far but fuck is it obnoxious having to check that Searchofthefallen site just to know what the actual line was supposed to say, I'd say this is the worst I've encountered for lack of proofreading in any eBook i've read.

I also came back to say that the more I'm getting into Book 6, the more I'm buying into the Mazrim is Demandred theory. I remembered Mazrim having a bit of attitude, but I didn't fully remember how many red flags. Even more red flags now that I suspect him of being Demandred.
For one, int the prologue, as Demandred and the other Forsaken are meeting, Mesaana's PoV provides us with some background to the man. According to her, Demandred was always envious of Lews Therin. That he believed he should have been in Lew Therin's place. That he always felt second place the Lews. She also thinks of Demandred as a gambler, jealous of Lew's luck.

These are all traits that Mazim displays. He resents being second next to Rand. His envy toward the dragon would explain why he played at being a false dragon. He was living out some twisted wish fulfillment.
Mazrim makes a comment about Rand seeming to have 10x luck. And I haven't gotten to it yet, but I remember the pin scene, where Mazrim was especially bitter about Rand marking him as lower rank.

Then there's Mazrim's weird knowledge. Rand opens a gate in from of Mazrim, and the man has zero surprise. All Rand could do was say "I'll teach you a gate, if you didn't catch that". Mazrim makes no response. Because he doesn't need a teacher for the weave. Rand is so ignorant about channeling, that he thinks you should be able to pick up something like traveling easily. He doesn't question how quickly Mazim "adapts". The way the book frame's Nynaeve's ability to pick up a weak after a single look at it, makes Nynaeve sound like a savant. Mazrim shouldn't have that ability too.

Rand is so focused on testing if men can channel, that he doesn't take into account that Mazrim shouldn't know how to test someone. That's weird. Mazim concocts a story about how he found a few others who could channel and they all went mad. A dubious tale. Then Rand asks how is it that Mazim hasn't gone mad after 10 years. Mazim said he doesn't know. But WE know, it's his connection to the great lord.
Also, Davram Bashere doesn't recognize Mazim at first. He denies it's him, until Mazim mocks Bashir, making him too angry to think. Bashir falls for the trick, unwittingly confirming the identity that is false.

And then on top of it all. Lew Therin is going crazy in Rand's head. At the sight of Mazrim, Lews stars rambling the forsaken's name in anger, saying he should have killed them all. And even singling out Demandred in his litany. Also, in book 4, Rand says you can always tell by their eyes. Referring to the disguises the forsaken wore during that book. He saw through their disguises by their eyes. Similarly, ran notices Mazrim's smile not touching his eyes. He's seeing the eyes are off again.

So I'm willing to believe that RJ at the last wrote these chapters with the Forsaken in mind.
