The trick is to reread it

first reading of the book is bound to be a bit too much as >>22697353 says, just go with the flow the first time then on your second time actually start thinking about what the fuck is going on

Would you mind sharing what it is that confuses you? I've read it about 6 or 7 times now, so narratively/plotwise I can follow it just fine. But now I can't remember what it is that confused me in the first place so I 'd like to recall what it was.

it's not confusing, it's just not that good. there will be genius paragraphs after 90 pages of pure shit. everyone talks about its genius, but the problem is that it doesn't lead to anythig worthwhile even after you follow the trail of clues, references, puzzles, or whatever you want to call it. the most interesting part imo was looking into a society during post war. everything else boils down to the mc 'muh dick' or 'he's crazy'. that's literally it. stop reading it.

I realized Pynchon was an incel larping deep military guy at about page 200. Put it down and probably won't ever finish it. Just missed me by 15 years.

I never found this very hard to read other than certain sections in Part 4 and that bit in Part 1 where Jessica and Mexico go into a church on Christmas.
