The plotlines became a bit more coherent and intricate and I think he actually started leaning into his own style and taking advantage of his reputation as an amateur. When I interviewed him in 2021, he implies that he purposefully wrote Call of the Arcade—one of his successful follow-up thrillers in the Horror’s Call series—from the perspective of an amateur writer. I suggest in the interview that he does this as a built-in anti-trolling technique, and it works well in that utility. In fact, the whole metaliterary approach he takes im that book pretty much serves to refute any criticism of his style. At the time, I thought it was genius, but still wasn’t entirely sure if he acted purposefully to that end, but since the F Games thing, I’m pretty sold on his natural ability to garner attention, marshal resources, and lead communities.

Listen anon: I was a huge fan of Gardner at the outset of my tenure here. I put a lot of effort into shilling his name and his work and even publicly defended him during his interview.
A few months ago, I was scheduled to interview him again. But I made a snide remark on Discord about how I was looking forward to dunking on his antisemitic comedy, Kabbalah of the Crocodile, and painting him as a racist. Which was supposed to be mostly funny, though I did want to extend his enigmatic lore and shroud him further in notoriety, I had never actually planned to comp the guy (Gardner himself wrote the book to take advantage of the antisemitic tendencies of this website and its users). He found my snide remark and decided to back out of the interview. A day or so later, a personal friend of mine was attacked on Instagram in some bizarre racist tirade by somebody pretending to be F. Gardner using a throwaway. I assumed it was actually F. Gardner and shot back by composting and posting a graphic yet hilarious death threat to him on Discord, and I declared war on him in &amp Magazine.
HOWEVER, it turns out that the tirade against my personal friend was actually likely the work of Ari, not Gardner. So I took a huge shit on Frank for no good reason! Of course the guy probably hates me; he has everything right to hate me; I don't expect him not to hate me, but I will still sing his praises and shill for his celebrity because I see now the err of my ways and better appreciate his genius.

Anyway, Gardner's writing style itself didn't change too much over the course of his career insofar however the subject matter that he covered, and the general complexity and depth of his plots did increase. For example, at first, his work was largely inspired by what seemed to be fairly entry level points along popular /x/ icebergs, and gradually grew to include more esoteric and mystic references. He's also experimented in format, having released an interactive paperback, Horror's Call Adventure (which I've recently ordered).
Now that Gardner has established himself as a bone fide patron of the local arts, I'm astounded that there are still individuals here that don't recognize his stature. He's bigger than ever.

Anyway, as I was saying, Gardner's work has definitely grown over the years, and I'll be excited to read whatever he releases next.
One of the interest things about Kabbalah of the Crocodile, is the caricature of Hasidic Jews is surprisingly accurate, indicating that he must have done some decent research for this work. There are also some good example of cross-lingustic wordplay and Yiddish puns, as well as some deeper-level Gematria that plays with page numbers and references to the Talmud. It's a surprisingly deep work for a comedy, and sort of turns the ideology of racism on its own head. Of course the prose is composed in his classic style (which I admit has grown on me after reading his wider catalog), so I'm not entirely sure how to rate the work in totality (again, confounded by genius (perhaps Gardner has filtered me afterall)), though as far as entertaining literature is concerned, he's really dialed into his niche.
