Probably not being terminally ill and not being socially isolated from people. He would have been a great career officer in the Prussian army or something if he wasn’t. Instead he was a sickly man, who spent his nights alone and in pain. His philosophy was a way for him to cope with his existence, and probably kept him from blowing his brains out like someone else would in his shoes because it stopped him from submitting to his deep seated nihilism.
