I've seen a lot of debate online and on /lit/ about the reported benefits of reading. In the scientific literature, reading reportedly increases emotional intelligence, leads to better school grades, improves your vocabulary, increases brain connectivity, increases life expectancy (look it up retard) and prevents dementia.

Deep down, this is why I read, It's entertainment with great cognitive benefits to myself. Moreover, reading is a much more personal, introsepctive and superior form of entertainment to anything else, its requirement of constant attention means it keeps my brain active, and my memory working. Additionally, good book selection will always challenge your brain, and if you're reading without some inherent challenge, wtf are you doing?

However I know people in my life who read purely for entertainment, which is somewhat sad, it goes against what I believe reading is about, reading is an intellectual sharpening stone.

So, I ask, Anon's, why do you read?

I only read wish-fulfillment Mary Sue novels so I can feel better about my pathetic existence.

To pwn the pseuds. To see them driven from the threads and hearing the lametations of their boy-fus.

I read for entertainment. I don't have interesting thoughts or rapturous insight.

For the same reason I watch movies, go to the theatre and play video games.

I got into reading because I'm autistic as shit and like to sit in my room all day. Nowadays I read for a similar reason — sharpening my intellect, learning from older generations, etc.

It's one of the few times when I feel I'm using my consciousness like it's supposed to be used.

I waste so much damn time on 4chan and tik tok doing stupid shit on my phone and I realized all of that is just reading short blurbs so I thought to myself imagine how much I could learn if I spent the time I normally waste in the day on reading
So far I've read 3 medium sized books (300-500 pages) and one huge book (~1200 pages) in 2 months

I read to learn new things and to appreciate and be entertained by beautiful works of art. I spend a lot of time doing it because I tend to be alone focusing on things by nature and its a better use of time and brain function than playing vidya or dwelling on past mistakes or future worries.

Yeah, absolute trash books that require you to fill in the void of intelligence.

I used these idiots for ideas, keywords to jump off and do my own research that I can take as deep as I feel like going, sometimes sending me down rabbit holes that last days or more.

I read because I want to become a writer. In my research and shitposting, I've come to the understanding that in order to better my skill in writing, I must read. All my anxieties, second guessing, and overall fear will leave my soul when I have read enough to be confident in my ability.

It's how non-autistic people are better than neurospicy individuals in social situations. Picking up social cues, reading the room and so on. If you're autistic there is no way for you to understand this I'm sorry.

You don't understand. You think I understand the basics of writing but I don't. I was at a point when the thought of paragraphs and dialogue were giving me panic attacks because I didn't understand how both can coexist with one another. Reading has settled that anxiety somewhat.
