most people at least vaguely know the stories of his more famous plays without ever having read or watched them. They have become this engrained into literature and western culture. How can they possibly be style over substance if they were this influential?
I love Tolstoy, but nobody can tell you the plot of Anna Karenina who hasn't actually read the book, it's not a story that is part of the public consciousness. Meanwhile, any kid can at least broadly tell you what happens in Romeo & Juliet or Hamlet.
