How come there aren't any books that are as deep and well written as Evangelion? Like books are inherently boring and if they're not even deep what do they have left?

>> No.22621107

Holy shit, read Kurt Vonnegut you depressed fuck. I'd recommend Slaughterhouse Five.

It's a matter of personal taste I suppose. I thought NGE was mind-numbingly boring and I watched it back when I actually was into anime, so I wanted to like it. I'd much rather reread War and Peace than rewatch NGE.

yeah nge came off as just a midwits self insert daydream. sparked no joy whatsoever, nor any neurons watching

NGE is the best anime of all time IMO so we got that in common anon. Try The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. It's a four book series, the first book is The Shadow of the Turturer. Currently it's being published as two volumes - first two books called Shadow & Claw, second two books called Sword & Citadel. Not as intense as NDE in that extreme anime intensity way, but equally massive in scale and weird in presentation and dripping with symbolism and layers of meaning. Not an easy read, if you're dumb don't even try it, but it's fucking good.

read infinite jest

I dare say the Infinite Jest rec is /thread worthy. OP either stick to anime and manga and go back to /a/ or drop the pretenses and read books.

>>22621159
if op reads infinite jest and doesnt see the parallels (they even came out the same year!) then he simply does not like reading

The current threads on /lit/ with a frog picture in the OP:
>this one
>There is not a single person left in the western world who believes that christian God of the bible actually exists and is the creator of the universe. Literally not one. It is impossible to actually believe that as a modern western man unless you are actually psychotic and schizophrenic.
>I FUCKING CAN'T STAND THE WAY DICKENS WRITES.
>writing is like masturbation: No, it's not just the progression of plot from exposition, climax, and conclusion. Every aspect of writing can be compared to masturbation.
>Why do you read books
>What was the most enjoyable book that you have ever read?
>What's your favorite book by an antisemitic writer?
>What are your ten favorite poems?
>>reading old book >character stops to make their toilet.
>niv>kjv
>God i pooped my pants
>How many books do you usually have on the go at one time?
Further proving that frogposters are either extremely bored or mentally retarded. Ignore their existence.

Does it get better? I read maybe 200 pages once and the writing was really good, some of the ideas were interesting, but it was just a mess of loosely related or unrelated shit spewing out endlessly. Does it develop into more of that or is the entire appeal just "oh woowwwww he good at writing"?

>> No.22621190

>>22621186
yes. the best way i can describe it is it's the literary equivalent of putting together a jigsaw puzzle. the more you read, the more it rewards you, the more you see the bigger picture, the more is revealed to you. and the concepts and thematics DFW elucidates as the underpinning of western north american society have only become more pertinent as the years have dragged on. there's a reason he couldn't bear to see the world post-2008.

Is the significance just mundane sociological and psychological insights about mundane reality or does he go into metaphysical / spiritual / apocalyptic / etc. areas? Thanks anon.

>> No.22621225

>>22621197
he really does dig into what it means to be addicted to pleasure in a way i haven't seen another author truly analyze. it will help you understand the age we were born into. he's all about sincerity—irony is poison. it is the mind and soul killer. irony is a rejection of the real, and comedy at its basis is funny because it's true. do the math.
so he will get metaphysical often, and spiritual as well, and the apocalypse may have very well already happened—that is a person experience for us. the apocalypse will not be all at one, but slowly and in individual portions until it has reached everyone.

If by NGE you mean an esoteric fear of the unknown, with a gradually increasing apocalyptic atmosphere, read Balthasar's Odyssey by Amin Maalouf.
If you look for a whiny undecided kid or a globalist elite wanting to take their logic all the way to end it all I don´t know.
