I just finished reading The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander, and I'm reminded now of how full of shit people are when they think this whole inclination fantasy authors have of taking the protagonist's love interest away from him is anything new. This garbage has been one of the most nasty thorns in the side of fantasy writing for a long damn time. And the saddest thing is that this wasn't really in any way a bad fantasy book until this part, aside from Eilonwy's annoying speech quirk and Hen Wen running away all the time.
Of course, by that time the Sons of Don had their chance to attack. You should have seen the golden banners. And such handsome warriors.” Eilonwy sighed. “It was—it was like—I don’t even know what it was like.”
“As soon as I saw Lord Gwydion,” Eilonwy put in, with an admiring glance at him, “I knew he was the one who should keep the sword. I must say I’m glad to have done with the clumsy thing.”
“Lord Gwydion,” Eilonwy called, as he rose to leave, “what was the Horned King’s secret name?” Gwydion’s lined face broke into a smile. “It must remain a secret,” he said, then patted the girl gently on the cheek. “But I assure you, it was not half as pretty as your own.”
Lloyd Alexander, you are a faggot.

What do you niggas think is going to go on with Sansa/The Vale in book 6?
Also do you think that Dany coming to Westeros would happen in book 6 or not happen until book 7?
IMO book 6 needs to be the culling book where most characters and sub-plots get killed off.

anyway, I can spot at least 3 Book of the New Sun covers, one Lord of the Rings one, a couple of pieces of art that aren't from any particular series (the orangey one with the bug skull titan looking thing is from Bruce Pennington, for example). Fire and Ice there in the middle and the obvious Jodorowsky Dune concept in the top right. There is a piece from Amano's VampD covers in the middle, too. What specifically are you look for?

Would you willingly own a dragon? A real fucking dragon, not a fluffy and overly affectionate sweetheart that can just switch into a ferocious beast whenever the plot demands, I mean a real shit dragon. A living creature with a mouth full of knives and a genetic tendency for violence and arrogance that needs to continuously be fed to sustain its growth to the size of a building. You’ll need to tame it first so it doesn’t just kill you when it’s big enough, then train it. The upside is that despite its animalistic ferociousness, deep within is a strongly willed soul looking for somebody worthy of its emotional attachments. I’ll also shoot off some quick questions, answer them or don’t idc
>what colors do you think would look the best? Would you want multiple or just a single, dominant color?
>would you use your dragon as a steed and weapon in battle and war, or as a scholarly assistant in pursuit of knowledge?
>what time period would you want to live in? A modern age? Medieval? What consequences and bonuses could come with it?
>would you live in a world that hates dragons and shuns them as wild beasts, and live as an isolated drifter living among them? Or a world that’s fully integrated with them?

>It's full of incest, rape, gay rape, a guy being raped by a dog, 90% of the book is just really badly written porn with the other 10% just being him torturing a guy and domestic abuse. Even looking past that it was really boring and extremely predictable to the point that it felt tiring just reading it. I had to stop at 88% through because it was just unbearably bad. Fights with monsters turned into a paypig farm. He had three books on earth where everything of importance could have been contained in half a book. The author also has a habit of ending a book on something interesting, then pretending like no such thing happened in the next, and starts to slog through the story. I also see he has other people talking like Jason, and the author is showing there stats and fights as a why to milk the series more.

>azarinth healer

Is this a random theory for the sake of it or is it hinted at in later books?

the origin of the trinket is pretty intriguing, the making was shared by the inchoroi with the nonmen who above all desire oblivion, which the trinket might provide given that they are negations of reality or void.

the inchoroi also gave the tusk to the humans, who above all desire the presence of a godhood, 2 gifts to vastly different philosophical races but one having the most pivotal moment in their race's history

Think the very bottom right might be from the Moebius graphic novel THE INCAL, or maybe from his AIRTIGHT GARAGE stuff. Definitely Moebius

Second from the left on the very top row is from "Inferno" a book of depictions of hell by artist Wayne Barlowe.

On the right hand side, the spaceship with the stripy square tubes I believe is a piece of concept art by Chris Foss for the unfinished Jodorowsky's DUNE.

I finished Peter F Hamilton's Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. They were fun to listen to and I liked the concept of the Starflier alien but sadly the whole thing is a plot device rather than the focus of the novels. It didn't feel like a mystery that you as the reader were meant to try and solve by yourself. I didn't feel like any of the reveals are things I should've been able to figure out by myself. Also, the author's fascination with whores is something I just don't get. Araminta was easily the worst part of the Void Trilogy books and Melanie sucks too. Am I supposed to find them attractive? Inspirational?

>Dany
I'd prefer she come in at book 7, and be hyped up in Westros as a threat after the devastation left by the others. I think the show got it right that she'll be a villain. But I think it'll be more like she comes in and is perceived as a scary foreign conqueror hellbent on ruling Westros with fire and blood, and less "zomg le heckin reddit bells! Aaaaaaa save me drogon I'm going craZzzyyyyy!". Putting aside David Lightbringer pedotheories about Dany, I think it's certain she'll get a taste for blood when she inevitably Harrenhal's Volantis.
Not sure where that leaves Euron though. Or the ironborn in general.
Book 6, if it ever comes out, will most likely cull the detritus characters. I think that's part of the reason Grum has had a hard time writing it. If nothing else, too many unnecessary POVs.

Multiple colors. But monochromatic if it's black.
>would you use your dragon as a steed and weapon in battle and war, or as a scholarly assistant in pursuit of knowledge?
Why not all of the above? Can a warrior not also be a scholar?
>what time period would you want to live in? A modern age? Medieval? What consequences and bonuses could come with it?
Medieval. I mean, people would fear and respect you. Like an sheikh in Dubai with a big ass tiger or whatever. Except a dragon would be more intelligent and destructive than that. I think ASOIAF makes a good argument though for dragons being incredibly hard to control.
>would you live in a world that hates dragons and shuns them as wild beasts, and live as an isolated drifter living among them? Or a world that’s fully integrated with them?

I occasionally rec Prince Roger/Empire of Man on here but no one ever fucking reads it. The premise is a Prince gets targeted for assassination and his ship crash lands onto a hostile alien world full of barbarians. The Prince and his team have to somehow survive and get back to the Empire, and of course he undergoes a lot of character growth along the way turning into a battle hardened leader from a somewhat soft (but underestimated) boy in the beginning. It’s just a fun story straight up. And the audio narrator for the series has a great manly voice btw very fitting.

i've read night's dawn and pandora's star/judas unchained
all the while i kept hearing pandora's star(commonwealth) series was better but i found the opposite to be true. night's dawn had a horrendously plodding beginning, i'll be the first to admit that. but once it gets going, i found myself loving everything about it.

commonwealth series was disappointing in so many more important ways. terrible pacing in terms of revelations, i kept checking what hour i was on, in disbelief that so much time has passed without anything important happening. after the fourth starflier agent who got away/got killed just in the nick of time i was losing my patience.
there's also ozzy's terrible fucking plotline of being innawoods that drags on for hours, for a payoff that amounts to a single infodump dialogue with absolutely zero impact on the overall plot
there's also ozzy's moralfagging about muh genocide against the prime aliums and how humanity would "lose its soul, man". which ended with humanity glassing dozens of star systems anyway, but the books making it sound as if humanity's hands are clean, for some reason.

there's also that horribly boring low tech railroad chase sequence against the starflier which seemed to go on for fucking ever. you can only be amazed that the starflier's train car's forcefield survived ANOTHER shot from ANOTHER powerful weapon so many times.
there's also the fact that the ultimate resolution was just shooting a couple of missiles and effortlessly swatting away a few prime ships. i can't believe the people who so confidently shat on night's dawn ending (which admittedly wasn't great) were trying to convince me that this one was better.

didn't read void trilogy because i was tired of hamilton's shit by then. night's dawn had a better setup for a sequel anyway.

the best kind of fantasy is the fantasy that doesn't ever accept that it is fantasy, and thus good fantasy does not exist in the modern era as all fantasy is derivative of other, older fantasy and most fantasy writers are conscious of this and insecure about it.
there's obviously other aspect to fantasy that make it good, but the target of writing a good book should always be to write a good book, not write a good book for the genre you want it to be in.

Black Sun Rising, Coldfire Trilogy #1 - C.S. Friedman (1991)

Damien Vyrce, a knight of the order of the Golden Flame, is a sorcerer in service to the Church. He has traveled far to the east to Jagganoth under orders to assist their patriarch. Upon his arrival he first visits the Fae Shoppe, which sells both items mundane and Worked (magical). He's immediately smitten with its proprietress, Ciani of Faraday. She's an adept, a person born with an innate connection to the Fae, which makes them natural sorcerers of far greater and exclusive ability. Soon after disaster strikes and Ciani has much of all that she is ripped from her. The only way for her to regain what was lost is to kill the one who did it to her. Damien, Ciani, and her sorcerer assistant Senzei Reese, set off in search of their quarry.

The main draw to me was the character dynamics. I don't remember when I last read such a contentious party who have so many competing emotions about their companions. That's especially the case for the character shown on the cover, who later joins, because at best he's a fallen hero, though it's probably more accurate to call him a villain. In reductive terms, he's an amoral vampire with a complex history. Somehow he's also the one who has the most character development, despite his age and desire to be set in his ways. Damien is extremely conflicted about his presence, though by the end there isn't much that he isn't conflicted about.

I also greatly enjoyed everything about the world. Unlike some other series, this one doesn't obfuscate. Everyone seems to know that humanity came to this planet, Erna, 1,200 years ago after 10s of millennia in cold sleep on a generation ship. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the planet, they had to make the Great Sacrifice and give up almost all of their technology. The animistic force that's omnipresent is called Fae and allows for emotions and beliefs to affect reality. It also allows for what's called magic for simplicity's sake. At the time of their arrival humanity were the only known sapient species. That didn't last long because humanity's intense beliefs caused a rapid evolution in several species and one in particular. If humanity was created in God's image, then this newly sapient species was created in humanity's image. War soon began. Elsewhere it wouldn't have been much of a conflict, but the problem with technology was if it wasn't fully understood and believed in, it often catastrophically failed.

I enjoyed everything about this except the plot, which I found to be too simple and convenient. It also failed to do enough with its setting and the backstories of its world and characters. The set-up for the next book also displeased me, but was more understandable. Simply put, I felt the plot was contrived and the weakest aspect by far. I had to think for a few days how to rate this, but there wasn't any doubt that I'd read the rest of the trilogy.

Rating: 3.5/5 (4)

I haven't read Night's Dawn. To be honest I only went back to read the commonwealth saga because I read most of the Void trilogy as a kid and it stuck in my mind because I discovered a fetish thanks to it. I listened to the void trilogy and then went back to read the Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained because I found the concept of the Starflier to be intriguing. I agree with most of what you wrote but I like the novels despite that. The novels do lack a sense of cohesion and sometimes it feels like Hamilton includes things because he thinks they're cool rather than because they are directly tied to the plot. Ozzy's plotline comes to mind here. The whores as well.
>there's also ozzy's moralfagging
Maybe I'm giving the author too much credit but I've always read a hint of scorn into his portrayal of the elites. In Ozzy's case, his moralfaggotry can be interpreted as a hedonistic trillionaire's pathetic callback to his hippie days. I see an arrogant asshole playing with the lives of billions because he wants to feel like he's still got values and that humanity has virtues and a destiny and it's not just a bunch of wagies being ruled over by immortal trillionaires and their legions of mediocre children.

All that said, I still enjoyed them. The parts that are told from Morning Light Mountain's POV are pretty cool. Especially that first contact bit.

I've watched the Foundation series, and although I disliked many of its stupid contrivances, I still liked it but mainly because of the Empire plotline. So, I decided to give the book a go.

As it turns out, the clonal genetic dynasty is completely a TV invention. The only plots are Terminus and the Foundation. I'm on part 5, Merchant Princes, but I feel zero excitement yet. Characters are superficially written, the plotlines that there are surprisingly as dull as their TV equivalent despite being greatly reimagined.

Am I being filtered? I don't see yet how it was hailed to the extent it was.
