It’s an elitist larp. Everyone knows that a translation will never live up to the original, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth reading. Many aspects of literature, poetry included, are translated fine. Wordplay doesn’t translate well but it’s not worth reading if that’s the only thing going for it. And if you aren’t a native speaker you will never properly understand the historical-cultural context perfectly anyway

I just ordered his novel, got the new translation Norton put out which was apparently translated by some guy who has won a bunch of awards for his Rilke translations. I assume it standard marketing gimmick, NEW TRANSLATION! and not much different from past translations.
