17th century grammar school was a far cry from the babysitting facilities of today. Shakespeare would have been expected to learn multiple languages (he did), write poetry using those languages (he did), and probably went through the progymnasmata, a collection of exercises based on imitation of great works. It’s very likely Romeo and Juliet was the result of a progymnasmatic exercise, as it’s clearly inspired by Ovid’s Pyramus and Thisbe.

In short: 17th century schoolboys could read better, write better, calculate better, and speak better than the 21st century’s most educated adults and that will never not be funny.
