Can you write sympathetic characters if you loathe other people or will your misanthropy always shine through? When I try coming up with characters they always get worse and worse the more I develop them. Do I need to like others and view humanity in a positive light to write anything worthwhile?

Not talking about good characters, I'm talking about sympathetic characters. Characters you can root for. Seems I can only write assholes decently, anything else turns into cardboard.
