I don't think so. A good writer has flair and style something AI is profoundly incapable of without just lifting it from elsewhere.

Bakker is KING
>Then the madness fell away. Once again it was the pure thunder of the charge. The strange camaraderie of men bent to a single, fatal purpose. Hummocks, scrub, and the bones of the Vulgar Holy War’s dead rushed beneath. The wind bled through chain links, tousled Thunyeri braids and Tydonni crests. Bright banners slapped against the sky. The heathen, wicked and foul, drew closer, ever closer. One last storm of arrows, these ones almost horizontal to the ground, punching against shield and armour. Some were struck from their saddles. Tongue tips were bitten off in the concussion of the fall. The unhorsed arched across the turf, screamed and swatted at the sky. Wounded mounts danced in frothing circles nearby. The rest thundered on, over grasses, through patches of blooming milkwort waving in the wind. They couched their lances, twenty thousand men draped in great mail hauberks over thick felt, with coifs across their faces and helms that swept down to their cheeks, riding chargers caparisoned in mail or iron plates. The fear dissolved into drunken speed, into the momentum, became so mingled with exhilaration as to be indistinguishable from it. They were addicted to the charge, the Men of the Tusk. Everything focused into the glittering tip of a lance. The target nearer, nearer … The rumble of hooves and drums drowned their kinsmen’s song. They crashed through a thin screen of sumac … Saw eyes whiten in sudden terror. Then impact. The jarring splinter of wood as lances speared through shield, through armour. Suddenly the ground became still and solid beneath them, and the air rang with wails and shouts. Hands drew sword and axe. Everywhere figures grappled and hacked. Horses reared. Blades pitched blood into the sky. And the Kianene fell, undone by their ferocity, crumpling beneath northern hands, dying beneath pale faces and merciless blue eyes. The heathen recoiled from the slaughter—and fled.

>I have to say I'm enjoying it so far
Awesome! Glad to hear it.

>Is this series your first attempt at writing novels
Yes - well, sort of. The first book is now in its second edition. The first version of it had a bunch of first time author mistakes and was significantly shorter (maybe 30-35K words less) than the other novels. I decided I needed to go back and redo it to bring the quality up to par with the others. I'm really happy that I took the time to do that.

>what made you want to go for a trilogy right off the bat?
It just seemed like the correct amount of space needed to tell the story that I wanted to tell. I also specifically wanted to have a sort of triple symmetry going on, where each book is 'themed' around (or at least focuses on) one of the three major nations in the world.

>I decided I needed to go back and redo it to bring the quality up to par with the others. I'm really happy that I took the time to do that.

I was wondering about this. It was a pleasant surprise when it didn't come across like a first time author's work. Now I know why. Congrats on getting it all done. Reworking the first book shows a lot of discipline. If I ever get my own work off the ground I'd like to think I'll be that principled. Everything takes so much time.

>It just seemed like the correct amount of space needed to tell the story that I wanted to tell

FWIW it doesn't seem like too much. Pacing seems very good so far. I will have more feedback when I've finished the second and third book though.

>am liking this but is it normal for me to sorta hate the main character? Quentin and the hangman are much more interesting to me
Yeah pretty much. I enjoyed writing those two characters a lot more than Jak. Jak is partially meant to be a parody of the hero's journey archetype. People like Quentin and Karzt ("the hangman") are a fleshed out part of the world, where Jak starts out almost as a blank slate so that he can be the eyes through which the reader sees the world.

I guess he does start out with certain traits that people might find appealing - he's hard working, thoughtful, doesn't give up, etc - but is definitely intended to lack the "charm" of pretty much every other character. I don't want to spoil it for you, but he does evolve as the novels progress - just maybe not in all the ways you would expect.

Just got through Blindsight and have read A fire upon the deep. Fire is way more comfy, less ship habitat focused and has larger scale world building. Blindsight is grim but has better mystery feeling to it. Both touch on many aspects of alternative conciousness. I'd say if you usually go for fantasy you'd enjoy fire upon more and if for thrillers then blindsight. Both were good but serve different moods.

Anyone got any kaiju/monster/fathomable cosmic horror related recs that manage to be taken seriously? Anything from medieval period with slight fantasy elements to hard scifi is acceptable apart from run of the mill godzillas, demon lord gook shit or dragons.

Have any of you read between two fires? Because of this post, I decided to give it a shot. The intro was decent but the first chapter felt weird. It has that modern fantasy vibe that always filters me. I swear I'm cursed when it comes to modern fantasy, I simply cannot read anything. It's like they lack soul. They are famous writers and regarded by many but then why does the prose feel amateurish and without substance?

>> No.22509588

I think it's a lack of consistency in their content as a whole, and an inability to meld archaic ways of speaking with modern ones in a manner that people can believe. Buehlman does an okay-ish job in Between Two Fires, but you can feel the struggle as you're reading it, and he curses a lot which doesn't help the matter one bit. His consistency is also lacking. There are some great highs in that book (like the Paris arc), but then it's as if the writer disappears, and I'm sitting there waiting for them to show up with something good again.

Alright Dresden Files #1 was absolute slop. But that pacing has me hooked, finished it in a weekend and I'm down to try more after struggling through 1,000 pagers all year.
The magic system didn't quite deliver. I'm a bit disappointed with how he was hinting at rules like having to invite people into homes, but then just barges his way into the suspect's wife's house. Or how he sets up the running water rule, then it never comes up again. I suppose there's chances for that as the series goes on, and the setup with the lightning worked well enough so it's not all bad. There's just generally a lot of magic going on and it did make it feel like he can always asspull something in a time of need.
But to reiterate on the pace: It was relentless, the guy gets battered every other scene and gets no sleep for the handful of days the story takes place over and the hits don't stop coming. I felt tired with him.

> Do you have any plans on expanding this series? Writing side stories set in the same world, anything? I would be interested

I'm glad you enjoyed it. At this time I don't have plans on expanding the series. The "main story" is clearly concluded in the final book, so I don't think it would make sense to write any direct sequels.

Side stories are a maybe, but probably not anytime soon. Certainly there is a lot more that could be told told with regards to some characters, or entirely new characters in parts of the world that we haven't seen much of. It would be nice to tell some more stories about Lantern City in particular.

Anyway, right now I'm working on a game which is set in the same world as the books. At a minimum I won't be writing anything else until that's done.

Hmm, maybe? It wasn't RPG Maker - it was an engine I wrote myself. Did it have a 2.5d-ish girl running around in real time? Blobber-style rpg combat with four frogs as placeholder graphics? That project has been on hiatus for a long time ever since I decided I wanted to focus on finishing my books (and book 1's audiobook, which is actually done and will be published soon).

I don't know if I'll revive that project. The thing I'm currently working on is a different idea - something kind of like a VN but with significantly more mechanics. I haven't yet buckled down though - I am sort of tempted to revive that old 2.5d thing and actually get it done.

Whether or not it had been wrought by a despicably horrid race of demented technicians in some wicked society of bygone demons, which must have inevitably collapsed from debauchery, or worse, was not the main cause of concern for Randolph Carter; instead, he wondered how long his face could take the pommelling of its swinging arc (what, with its large, barbed phallic head the size of his fist) over and over, until he felt almost so lightheaded he might have passed out, or grown mad with the constant torturous pain. Still, he could not cognise its sheer size and physiological impossibility; for certain, it seemed halfway between a hyena's pseudo-penis and an ungulate's cock, a horse's low-hanging member, say. Except it was natheless outrageously covered in grooves of ebonic, draconic scales covered (hither and thither) with matted, slimy dreadlocks of putrid-smelling fur, which seemed to be dripping with some excretions. It could have been sweat, or saliva, or pus. But that was not what terrified Randolph Carter to the ends of his sanity, for he looked with widened, trembling eyes, a scream half making its way up his choking, hoarse throat, as he saw those insane things slipping in and out, all over the long, swinging black cock. What had the insane gods thought when they fashioned this thing? Randolph Carter's tears fell and a scream welled in his gut, but could not come, as he saw those dreadful organs, or whatever they were, that looked half-tongues, half-probosces (for they had holes of their own that expanded like nostrils). These had protruded, and retreated back inside, fro a network of crusty holes (like barnacles, if only ever more horrid); little cells had lined the pus-dripping sides of that flopping terror-bludgeon. Randolph Carter finally screamed; it ruptured out of his chest and mouth like a clarion from hell. But, then, he felt the flying Nightgaunt ascend and tug at his shoulder blades with its talons, as the big cock flicked up into the dark night, then he saw with growing horror as that thing slammed back down into his face with such force he was almost concussed.

His caterwaul stopped, for sure, but that was due to his mouth being veritably filled with the thing, whatever it was, as if to silence the fellow. His failing heart went a-thundering; his very own lips spread as far wide and open as possible, to the point of pain; his fear had grown to heights hitherto unknown; the man, at his wit's end, gagged, spluttered, and coughed. Within his lips and inside his cheeks, which filled to the point of swelling with vomit and saliva, he felt the maddening, terrible girth of that horrid organ-with-organs inside his mouth, expanding and pulsing, up and down like the rise and fall of a human chest! Had it breathed? O cruel, inconstant gods of anti-climax, what hath ye made! It finally unclasped itself from his mouth and swung back down, as some ooze dribbled down the side of his face; vomitus and other sickness, mostly pus, jettisoned out into the open air of the sky. A gurgling hell swelled in Randolph Carter's insides... What was it, anyway? He thought it must have upended all known evolutionary routes since fish walked the earth. If he listened carefully over the sound of the howling high gales, he half-thought to himself that he heard screams. Yes, he heard it above the roar of wind and flap of wings: the strange, faint screams emanating from the pseudo-barnacles! The cock was alive!

Reading Dostoyevsky's The Idiot I came to the realisation that Brandon Sanderson took the idea and personality of Hoid/Wit from the character of Ferdyshtchenko. This is apparent from Part 1 Chapter 13, where Ferdyshtchenko even says:
>You see, excellency, all the world is witty and clever except myself. I am neither.
Also, his role in the parties was to:
>But these vulgarities seemed to please Nastasia Philipovna, although too often they were both rude and offensive. Those who wished to go to her house were forced to put up with Ferdishenko. Possibly the latter was not mistaken in imagining that he was received simply in order to annoy Totski, who disliked him extremely. Gania also was often made the butt of the jester’s sarcasms, who used this method of keeping in Nastasia Philipovna’s good graces.

Of course, none of Brandon Sanderson readers has noticed this because they don't read good books.

Damn, that sucks. I'm asking because I went to barnes and nobles to see what contemporary sci-fi/fantasy is like. All the 'best-sellers' displayed prominently on their own shelf were things like:

'But knowledge obeys power, and as a Chinese boy raised in Britain, Robin realizes serving Babel means betraying his motherland. As his studies progress, Robin finds himself caught between Babel and the shadowy Hermes Society, an organization dedicated to stopping imperial expansion. When Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, Robin must decide…'

or

'In what Helena perceives as the deepest betrayal, Leonie has defected to start her own more inclusive and intersectional coven, Diaspora. Talk about a gut punch of a novel. …A provocative exploration of intersectional feminism, loyalty, gender and transphobia invites readers into an intricately woven web of magic, friendship and power.'

I was hoping you guys would know of some exceptions but apparently not.
RIP.

He followed her into the pantheon. He was greeted with skin and blood.

Ilios, god of the sun, bearer of radiance, had been strung from the top of a branch, as if he was no more than a chandelier. His feathers had been plucked from his skin, and the skin itself had been flayed from the flesh, stretched out by a tangle of hooks and wires until it appeared like a mockery of wings. His pose had been transfigured to match the friezes that lined the arcade—other gods leaping into a chasm, billowing their wings in pursuit of demons. Stories of myth and legend. Unlike the paintings, Ilios was marred with broken ribs, jagged limbs, organs peeking through rotten flesh. He leaped over nothing but a dried lake of blood.
Sadik could only stare in horror. Someone had murdered a god.

His lord. His patron. His guiding light.

Give it a rest, retard. I know I said I wouldn't reply to you again, but just so people can see that you're spamming the thread with nonsense I'll post pic related.

Sure! Not sure if you want spoilers or not. I'll give a synopsis with some but not many.

Short version:
It's a coming of age story where a boy becomes a man during a time of war. He starts out naive, with simple goals like "keep the peace" and "save the innocent." He's obsessed with the idea of becoming a hero, and through this series finds out what that's actually like in the real world.

Long version:

I'm going to ramble a little here because, if you wanted a compact synopsis, you would have just read the one on Amazon or whatever.

The concept of "young man from a farm wants to become a hero" is a time-honored trope, but it's not all that's going on here. Really, these books are about war and intrigue. I play with magic vs technology tropes - one country is a sort of semi-theocracy-dictatorship which outlaws magic and enslaves nonhumans (mostly orcs). Another is a loosely-allied feudalistic society run by highly powered magical warlords who style themselves as living gods and mostly treat their people as expendable. These two nations have a cold war going on at the beginning of the series.

In the middle there's a much smaller neutral nation. Its capital is a castle on a bridge which spans a river in the southern-middle of the continent. It's the only feasible point on the continent where the two other nations can cross with an army, so it's in their interest to keep the cold war cold. They're much smaller and weaker than the other two nations, but they're able to maintain individually-more-powerful soldiers because unlike the west they do not ban magic, and unlike the east they don't hoard and guard magical secrets (quite as much, anyway). So they have this small, elite force which is both a standing army, but also hires out as mercenaries to either nation. The idea is that if there's some kind of incursion on either side - slavers heading east to capture slaves, or rogue wizards creating trouble in the west - the Chateau has both financial and existential reasons to deal with it.

Jak, the main character, wants to join this force ("the Cascadian Knights") and the series starts with his attempts to become strong enough to do so. Through him we get a ground level view of the conflict - its origins, the intrigues that surround it, etc.

What is the best 4chan archive for /sffg/ ?

I wrote something earlier this year in a thread and i'm trying to find it. Can't remember exactly what I wrote but it included 'dear brave sir knight'. It was about a knight going to a witch's grave to get a necklace or a ring.

Can you guys recommend me good novellas? Something quick and short to read, either fantasy o scifi.
I recently read an Expanse novella and I'm in the mood to read short stories now.

I don't like those. What is even the point of short stories when by the time I am ready to invest in it it's over? People who write short stories should be shot.
